  1. At the expense of St Dominick I imagine. With StD gaffers moving to Calli to work with Southy, it was inevitable some lads at StD would follow, most of whom are more than good enough. Ryall, Barrett etc. And most would’ve been dual registered between the two clubs last season anyway. Just a change in priority of who they play for.
  2. Fantastic news? I’m not sure everyone would agree. Just the big boys.
  3. And then Liskeard win the title, Neil and Olly's 3rd consecutive SWL title, and then they leave said title winning club again? Not sustainable and what I'd be aiming for personally.
  4. Damerell, Shepherd and Payne all due to leave Helston announced on the club's twitter. Can't say I'm surprised with the increase in travel going up to the SL and can't imagine they'll be the last to leave and stay elsewhere in the WL.
  5. Saltash 0 - 1 Torpoint Athletic Torpoint goal scorer: Easterbrook. An important win last night to finish our season off and confirm our 3rd place in the league table. Taking over the side that finished 8th last season there's been a large turnover of players and with new faces, we were unbeaten in pre season across 6 friendlies. Early signs positive. But we lost the opening 3 league games and were bottom of the table going into the Millbrook derby. Thankfully we recovered and went on a better run of form, particularly since December losing just 2 of the last 13 league games. By that point our side looked quite different again compared to early August. Admittedly we've dropped valuable points in games we should've won, notably drawing at St Mawgan away when 2-0 up with 10 to play, losing to them at home in a game we dominated the chances created, and recently another 2-0 lead at home to St Austell ending in a draw, among a few other slip ups. However, a very positive season where for the most part we've played really well. Losing 8 league games looks significant but only the unbeaten champions did the double over us and 2 other clubs walked away unbeaten. The remaining losses we avenged and always nice to finish above rivals Millbrook and Saltash. Last night we started very brightly and should've been out of sight within 10mins but it remained 0-0. Within the opening 5mins Easterbrook hit the post, had a left footed effort fly over the bar and a simple header inside 6yds lacking the finish from a superb cross from Ross on the right. Ross himself had the favour returned a minute later and his attempt of a header was feeble when it was easier to score. Westall then got involved in flirting with the Saltash goal and fired a fierce effort over the bar when driving into the box. Finally we opened the scoring our dominance deserved on 17mins when a neat pass down the right hand side by Ross released Westall whose superbly weighted ball into the area was swept home low by Easterbrook for his 25th of the season, a feat I believe puts him the top scorer in all comps for the St Piran East Prem. We should've extended this lead with further entries into the box from all 3 forwards at various intervals. This was mostly aided by the superb defensive work of the back four and the midfield 3, even Jimi! As the half wore on Saltash did improve and the work of Nicholls and Jefford were a threat. The latter's crossing from both open play and set pieces a real weapon, and Nicholls started to pick the ball up in dangerous central areas. One of which won his side a free kick 25yds out, which fortunately for us wasn't hit well enough. For the most part Waltzy and Ryan Knight were kept very quiet given their ability. 0-1 HT. 2nd half wasn't as one way and had far fewer chances for both sides. Jefford continued to put decent balls in the box which most were well collected by Sidey in goal or cleared. This nullified most of the threat and few shooting opportunities came about. We did defend well but far less threatening on the ball, with counters being our only outlet. Westall got in twice with the first on the right hand side of the area fired over when clean through, and his second advance rounded the goalkeeper and his left footed effort towards the empty net didn't have the direction or the legs to give us a cushion. Numerous times Easterbrook was whiskers away from breaking through due to defensive errors or with the assistance of a very bumpy pitch, but wasn't quite able to get away. Saltash kept chipping away but Murray and Crawford stood strong, with the only chance left in the game from a corner was fortunate to only be hit too close at Sidey very late on who held onto the effort. Though Saltash controlled most of the 2nd half, our defensive work limited them in our third and we looked sturdy enough to hold on for the win. Season over now and my last game with the 2nd team as I'll be stepping back from dugout duties. Feels like a long 9 months due to the stop/start games thanks to our lovely Cornish weather. Well done to St Dominick for dominating all competitions in the league. Be interesting to see what happens next season with new management there and the usual turnover of players.

  7. You're probably right on some of that but a few of those didn't play against us at your place and I missed the game at The Mill. Barrett and Blatchy played who we know are solid. Can't comment on players I haven't seen or recall.
  8. For me I'd say team of the year is easy. St Dominick have ran away with it and being unbeaten at any level is a great achievement. Their best player for me is Ryall who for years has banged them in. Not just his goals, he's a top player with a superb set piece and he should be at Step 6. I also liked Lucas Preston at St Mawgan and for years been a fan of Joe Reeve at North Petherwin. By my maths the league's top scorer in all comps is Ryan Easterbrook with 24 goals with 1 game left to play who has been a big asset for Torpoint.
  9. An admirable feat amongst us anoraks Numpty. And thank you Deacs for running it.
  10. Launceston 2 - 2 Torpoint Athletic Torpoint goal scorer: Easterbrook x2. The same score line as last week with a desmond away at Pennygillam, but a far more positive feel to it. 2pts dropped obviously but I came away pleased with our play and did more than enough to win most games of football, but that's often been the story of our season. In recent games we'd started really poorly but we came out of the blocks with far more intent last night and took the lead inside 2 minutes. A bit of a hopeful pass in the direction of Easterbrook was missed by the defender and he tucked it away for 0-1. We poured forward and again Easterbrook the main focal point then hit the post around 5mins in. Further chances for Easterbrook who drove a left footed effort low at goal was well stopped followed by a miraculous save by the home keeper from Westall from an acute angle on the right. Reminiscent of a Maicon goal from the byline a few years ago, frankly the keeper had no right pulling the ball back out with the power it came in, unsure if it crossed the line but would've been close. Could've been 2-3 up by this point but Launceston equalised with around 25 played through Elvidge with a neat finish after good work down the wing was squared into the area. An immediate response from us should've put us back in the lead, with Taylor finding time and space 10 yards out hit a tame effort too close to the keeper before Easterbrook restored our lead soon after from a Cam Ross assist from the right hand side. 10mins later Easterbrook again a thorn in the home side had his 1v1 effort saved too! Home keeper kept them in it first half. 1-2 at the break. The early parts of the half were relatively uneventful on our part, as we didn't create as many chances. Launceston reduced their errors, and had an improvement going forward with the introduction of Cardiff for Oldaker who immediately gave Launceston a speedy threat out on the left and Elvidge moving more central. Ross was mostly kept quiet by the left back (Wilson I think?) and was changed for Halls, but Easterbrook remained the biggest threat, who skipped inside the right back and fired wide when had room to run into. The reintroduced Payn into the 10 role gave us a different off the ball option and his first meaningful run in behind was imo wrongly flagged for offside. Launceston then equalised around 75mins with a nice individual goal from Hudson, who turned back in from the dead ball line on the right and slid the ball under Sidey for 2-2. We then hit the post two more times with Easterbrook skinning the full back and driving a fierce side footed effort around the keeper to smash the post and bounce clear on 82mins then Payn staying onside late in the game side footed his effort past the onrushing keeper to hit the base of the opposite post. Another chance begging! 2-2 FT. A shame to draw the game given the chances we had and truthfully Sidey didn't have any saves to make for us barr the 2 tucked away. But overall I'm pleased with how we played last night and was an enjoyable game. A big thank you to Ash who stepped in very last minute to referee the game when we had no one show up and I don't think it will be long before we see him officiate at this level. Just the one game remaining away at Saltash next week, which was also our curtain raiser back in early August. Feels like a long 9 months!

  12. Maybe not a Helston, but having a Step 5 club in the Plymouth area should certainly be appealing to the countless players who travel into Cornwall to play that level. Gambs and Bailey have done hell of a job in their first season that can't be argued!

  15. Torpoint Athletic 2 - 2 St Austell Torpoint goal scorers: Easterbrook, Taylor. Hugely disappointed given we were 2-0 up at HT, but St Austell to their credit fought back and were good for the draw. It was St Austell who started the stronger and we were nothing but frantic in our play. Their best chance of the first half came from a quality ball in behind to a well timed run from the visiting forward who came face to face with Sidey in goal quickly, but passed him to drive towards an open goal only to hit his effort at goal at the retreating Fuller to block on the line. Chance gone begging and a wake up call for Torpoint. After that we did improve from 25-30mins played having been the lesser side. St Austell were adamant at playing from the back but it was repetitive and in time we got great joy from it, winning the ball back multiple times high up on the left with Easterbrook and Westall backed up in numbers. This gave us opportunities but efforts on goal were blocked, saved or off target. With half an hour played we got ourselves on top and took the lead from a set piece. A curling ball in from deep on the left by Taylor found Easterbrook whose deft touch with his back to goal flicked the ball inside the near post with the keeper nonethewiser. This hit St Austell and we were quickly 2-0 up. A chipped ball from right back found Taylor running in behind whose first touch was incredible to bring the ball down to drop in front of him, and in one swift act lifted the ball on the half volley over the onrushing keeper from 25 yards with a delicate finish. As individual quality goes, it could be our goal of the season. On top until the half we should've put the game to bed, with Payn getting himself through on goal 1v1 only to not get his shot away, a common trait and an opportunity missed as a last ditch tackle came in. 2-0 up at the break with only 15mins of dominance and could've been out of sight, but were fortunate Fuller rescued us early on. The 2nd half was 45mins to forget and frankly embarrassing to watch as we kept giving the ball away time and time again. St Austell came out fighting and were back level within 10mins from 2 set pieces. On 50mins a free kick given out on the right was taken by Hutchings with an inswinger and headed into the net. Then 5mins later a set piece from the opposite side was again headed in for their equaliser. Disappointing to concede from set pieces but we ourselves benefitted from one in the first half, and sloppy from us to give away so many in dangerous areas. St Austell were the same and the game was riddled with cheap free kicks from less than meaningful contact. I've seen more contact in u12s games. Fortunately for us St Austell didn't threaten enough from then and go for the win as with very limited numbers they may have ran out of energy. We didn't capitalise on this as the Monstars from Space Jam had stolen our powers from the 15min spell in the first half and we forgot to play football, run, breathe, compose, care. Not the way I wanted to bow out of our home games for the season with a poor performance. 2-2 FT. Two to go away at Lanson next week and Saltash the week after. Can't wait.

  17. I was a neutral. Due to road closures in Lostwithiel I missed the first 30+mins and it was 2-1 to Lanreath when I'd arrived, so maybe they'd been on top up until that point. Up until half time I actually thought the 50/50 decisions were going in Lanreath's favour and Dropship were vocally frustrated. 2nd half was poor in terms of real quality, apart from one of the Dropship goals where the forward weaved in and out of multiple defenders and slid the ball under the keeper for a nice goal. But Lanreath barely created anything 2nd half, losing the ball too easily any time the ball was passed forwards, the wide men in particular were poor. Dropship did create and were the better team. Certainly helped with the numerical advantage after Lanreath went down to 10 then 9 men with the red and the sin bin. I was miles away from the red card incident but if the linesman didn't see it nor have an input in the decision, it had to be leave all 22 players on the pitch. Otherwise it's pure guesswork as the referee had his back turned with play downfield and the altercation behind him. The latter part of the game was a walk in the park for Dropship, with the no.7 in particular keeping the ball well and alleviating all pressure from the middle of the pitch. Lanreath by this point were playing 4-1-4 and that is how they lost control of the game, as well as the lack of discipline. And any ref who knows names of players isn't an area of concern of me. The ref was from the western side of the county so it's natural he may have had Dropship games before. Had it been an eastern ref appointed, I'm sure the shoe would've been on the other foot.
