  1. Padstow again leaving it late! Could've dropped 4pts in their last 2 games and have come away with 6. The gap at the top they've created may not be a true reflection on the league, but you can't argue with the facts. There must be some spirit in that squad at the moment to be getting results like this in such a manner.
  2. A fair report of the Padstow v Torpoint game. I thought you edged most of the game but we created all the goal scoring chances. We defended well & broke quickly. Heartbreaking to concede the equaliser so so late! We've gained a single point over the 2 games & I'm convinced we should have 6. On a side note I thought the state of the changing rooms on our arrival was poor. Clearly hadn't been cleaned of the mud & rotten banana skins from previous fixtures. However the spread put on after the game was the best I've seen in years. Kudos to the social club.
  3. There's a difference between dirty and tough. Having watched the video a few times I can't see anything dirty about it. I've played with and against that player and I wouldn't describe him as dirty either.Having a player who wins their tackles is an asset and with a different referee his goal may have stood. His trailing left leg isn't off the ground. It only looks bad because of the pace he won the ball at, that doesn't result in a foul in my opinion. I do appreciate though that people will want to protect their players. Just my opinion and that's what the forum is for.
  4. Torpoint 4 - 5 Padstow Both teams had a 100% record prior to KO so it was an early test for who would be league front runners. Both teams looked strong in different phases of the game and we (Torpoint) were gutted to lose after being in a commanding position at 4-2 up with 25 to play. Padstow were deservedly 2-1 up at HT but we came out of the blocks in the 2nd half. We should've been 5-2 up but a Vigus finish was disallowed, wrongly in my opinion. From where I was on the pitch he looked yards onside & ran behind 2 defenders when the ball was in the air, to lob the GK. Outraged. Padstow fought back and we collapsed under the pressure. They showed great character to win the game but I don't think either team deserved to lose overall. A spirited game with some tough battles that didn't overstep the mark. I think teams will have to find both sides on an off day to get many points from them.
  5. St Columb Major 1 - 4 Torpoint Athletic (D Murray, C Westall, B Robbins, M Westall) A game of two halves as we (Torpoint) went in 3-0 up at HT. We controlled the half but it was only really shown in the scoreline with late goals in the half when Columb seemed to switch off, with Chris Westall & Byron Robbins both scoring in the last 4minutes. St Columb switched to two up front in the second half and came out a completely different side. They applied a lot more pressure and camped in our third for periods, with only the one goal to show for it. Torpoint's keeper reduced the pressure superbly at times collecting crosses or coming off of his line well. Torpoint did get another goal from a counter attack when 16yr old debutant Harry Stephens swept in a cross for Matt Westall to put past the home goalkeeper. St Columb were a much more improved and organised side than previous seasons and if they play the full 90 at the intensity they did in the second half they will be sure to take points from visiting sides on what is a good pitch and they should take credit from that. Good luck for the remainder.
  6. Cesc is correct. One 7 day approach per month, unless it is waived by the club secretary.
  7. Torpoint Athletic 2 – 0 St Newlyn East A solid win from a young Torpoint side in only their 2nd home game of the season. St Newlyn edged the first half in terms of pressure and possession but failed to convert their chances. They probed throughout but Torpoint dug in. A fizzed ball across the box was the first warning sign, followed by a few crosses and corners which Torpoint threw themselves at when needed and were disciplined with their approach. They should have scored if I’m honest but they were unable to. When Torpoint did break they broke at pace and did manage two goalscoring chances of their own. Luke Gibbons arrived on the edge to sidefoot just wide and Matt Westall had a powerful shot fly over the bar. The only other chance was superbly tipped over the bar from the St Newlyn keeper from Byron Robbins’ placed shot. 0-0 at HT. In the 2nd half Torpoint took control of the game. Again they defended well when necessary but the improved forward play from Torpoint’s front pair allowed Torpoint to keep the ball and build some good moves around them. The breakthrough eventually came when the ball dropped to Gibbons inside the box to smash home to The Shed’s delight! St Newlyn weren’t out of the game but were kept at bay by some good saves from the Point keeper. Torpoint’s 2nd after about 65mins had a bit of luck to it when a Robbins freekick deflected off of the wall and wrong-footed the goalkeeper and ended up in the other side of the net. The game finished 2-0 with Torpoint continuing to work hard to reduce St Newlyn’s chances of getting the ball to their no.10. 7 home and 1 away fixtures to play so still plenty of graft to put in to finish as high up the table as we can. Cheers to St Newlyn and the official for a well controlled game.
  8. I've given a foul throw or 2 in my time, as my name suggests, but never once for "spinning" the ball. A ridiculous notion. If your feet are on the ground & the ball was thrown from behind the head with 2 hands then you have no problem. I think if you've got someone who can throw the ball a mile then why not use him, regardless of the technique. It's as good as a set piece if you've got it in your arsenal. I just hope referees aren't pressured into thinking it's against any rules!
  9. Torpoint Athletic 2 - 3 St Dominick We are more than disappointed in ourselves to not progress from this round but fair play to St Dom who kept plugging away right until FT. With 4mins remaining we were 2-1 up but we showed our inexperience and naivety and let St Dom equalise, for them then to hit us again with a cleatrocket from at least 35yards, maybe more, from a silly free kick. St Dom's captain really caught it, but in my opinion he should not have been on the pitch following a horror tackle earlier in the game. But that's football. Obviously gutted with the result, along with a few other games we've had recently, but we'll come through it eventually and turn things around. Congratulations to St Dom who really worked hard for eachother to get the win and it showed. Thoroughly deserved in the end. It was nice to see a team with as many youngsters as us looking to play good football. The ginger lad in the middle impressed me especially. Good luck for the rest of your cup run.
  10. St Cleer 1 - 3 Torpoint Athletic The game started off poorly with neither team really putting their foot on the ball. St Cleer eventually got a foothold and had a succession of corners which Torpoint managed to defend. A quick breakaway got Torpoint's Rothwell through on goal and although it wasn't put away, it gave Torpoint the kickstart they needed to take control. Soon after, good work on the right again gave Rothwell a shooting chance inside the box. His cross/shot fell to a well placed Bartolini who was only a yard or so out to tap in at the back post. St Cleer, shooting downhill, did continue to put the pressure on though, with more set pieces. They equalised from an inswinging cross from the right avoiding everyone but the St Cleer attacker who got the vital touch and finished well. For the rest of the half Torpoint weren't rattled by the setback and pushed forward again. Just before HT Rothwell's pace again got him inside the box, to be brought down by the GK. He picked himself up and finished the penalty well. Although Torpoint went into HT 2-1 up, St Cleer might've counted themselves unlucky after having numerous shooting chances from 20 yards, with some going close. 2nd half with Torpoint shooting downhill there wasn't as much space in behind. They carved out a few goal scoring chances in the half, with one sitter missed at what could've been a crucial time with it still being 2-1. Eventually the 3rd was put away to give Torpoint a much needed cushion. Superb footwork and throughball by the young Chris Westall put Rothwell through. The St Cleer GK was quick off his line but Rothwell was brave and slid in to finish under the goalkeeper. St Cleer to their credit continued to press, with 5 & 11 causing Torpoint problems at times. The introduction of Torpoint's Smith who has been missing through injury since pre-season, gave them a bit more solidity in the middle and helped shut the game down. A much needed 3pts for Torpoint to boost our confidence after a lot of draws this season, and a close tie losing to Saltash in the cup last week. I think St Cleer will pick up points this season and have improved from last year. No.5 was a dangerman and if he and his team mates actually see the benefits they can be to eachother they will do well. Thank you for the hospitality. Good luck for the remainder of your season.
  11. A good game on Saturday ended with Saltash progressing in the KO Cup. A lot of talk in pre-season of both sides looking to do well and this game was a good advert for both. Two young sides who try to play good football. Saltash took an early lead from a direct free-kick which the Torpoint GK let slip through his greasy mits. I think it was Tony Jane who took it. Not long after that he calmly finished from close range to make it 2-0. At this point I did predict the worst but Torpoint didn't bend over and let themselves down. Good work on the left resulted in a good save from the Saltash GK but it was bundled in by Rob Edwards. In the 2nd half, Torpoint equalised after a free kick was crossed into the box to the towering Will Dunstone whose header somehow fell to fellow defender Luke Britzman to slide home. The 2nd half was played at a fast pace but Saltash did eventually break the deadlock once more with another superbly taken goal from Jane. A cross from the right was brought down and slid into the corner past the GK. From then Torpoint were chasing the game once more but Saltash were experienced in their play, controlling possession and slowing at down when they could. The lad in the middle who came on particularly impressed me with his tempo and distribution. I think his name is Dan Parks but i'm not 100%. I've seen him play a lot higher standard in the past and his quality did show through. Despite losing I think we at Torpoint can be confident that our young side will continue to improve and the results will come I am sure of that. On Saltash, I think they are the best we've played this year and should be disappointed not to finish the season with at least one piece of silverware. I think they will finished the Duchy Prem in the top 2, alongside the robust Pensilva. Will be an interesting fixture between those two. All the best for the remainder of this cup run! Torpoint No.3
  12. Bruegel thank you for your praise. I try to give a fair assessment of each game i'm involved in. It is hard not to be biased towards my own side but I am confident I am honest. Too often on here I read opinions, "facts" or reports which are clearly one sided or have ill blood/malice. During the 90 you can be as mean as you want but off the pitch we all have in common the fact that we just enjoying representing our town and mates so that's where the line should be. No.10, I do remember both goals but apologies for getting you and 9 the wrong way round. I was close with the formation, it was certainly narrow!! I do not like being critical of the man in charge, just my opinion that to improve he needs to be more of that, in charge! That would've led to less handbags and testosterone flying about. I usually think the best referees are the ones you do not notice. See you again later in the season.
  13. Duchy Prem Result St Newlyn East 2-2 Torpoint Athletic A feisty game for two fairly decent sides ended in a deserved draw for both. With 4 bookings apiece it could've even ended with less than 22 on the pitch. Whether this was down to either the referee missing the events, interpreting them differently, or just not having the cajones is to be debated! St Newlyn set up with a narrow 4-3-3 from the start and upset Torpoint's defence who didn't react to the formation utilising the gaps and pace of their forward line. For the opening 20minutes Newlyn dominated and may have thought they deserved more than a 1 goal lead. Torpoint did eventually shore up at the back and grew in confidence because of this. Offensively though, Torpoint weren't playing badly, hitting the post after only 3mins after a sharp turn 20yards out from Tom Rothwell. Torpoint equalised maybe 25mins into the game when Oli Brooks was brought down in the box, for Rothwell to finish the resulting spot kick into the top corner. Minutes later they should've had another penalty when L.Murray was fouled when going through, for the referee to wave play on. I hate to say it, but sometimes offences aren't given when so closely timed together during a game when they are both fouls. A foul is a foul regardless of what point of the game it occurs in. Just my opinion. Newlyn continued to create their own chances though with balls played over the top and/or into the channels, particularly into their no.9 and 10. 10 might admit he should've scored more in the game. Torpoint took the lead right before HT. The ball was worked down the left from Bays & Trethewey into the feet of Rothwell, who again showed good feet before rolling the ball into the path of the continued run from Bays who opened his body to place into the far corner. Minutes after the restart of the 2nd half Newlyn whipped a cross in from the right which could've been dealt with by either the GK or defender. A lack of communication though led both of them to leave it for each other. The ball dropped kindly for No.10 to tap in with ease. The remaining 40minutes saw no more goals, but lots of tough tackling and a few chances for both, particularly Newlyn. A few players should perhaps have walked in my opinion, at different incidents during the half. A more decisive authority from the referee earlier on may have stopped the later incidents from happening. Both the No.10 of Newlyn & No.5 of Torpoint were flirting all afternoon so I doubt they could complain too much. No.4 of Newlyn also had a stonewall penalty turned down after going past the GK then being brought down by the defender. No idea how it wasn't given, but this was happening for both sides. To add to the report, I'd give slight praise to both sides for a feisty encounter which didn't go over the edge or too far at heated times. I say this because a stamp by 10 of Newlyn and an off-the-ball kick to the same player afterwards could've both boiled over. However, both players shook hands after & knew it was part & parcel. Newlyn were very hospitable guests after the game and were happy with a point. Although Torpoint left still peckish as we're all still all growing into strapping young men! I'd be interested to read any response or opinion of the game from a Newlyn point of view. If you're interested as to who I am I was the No.3 at left back. #goalscorer
  14. Torpoint Athletic 3 - 2 Polperro Yesterday's game had the privilege of being held at The Mill, with Torpoint's 1sts in SWPL having played an away fixture on the Friday, and 2nd team in ECPL away at Witheridge. Both teams started slowly, not really putting a foot on the ball and dictating an early dominance. After 5-10mins though Torpoint grew in confidence & began to press and control the game in certain areas. From then Torpoint owned the half creating two open goals which were missed but still finished the half 2-0 up. The first being a sloppy defensive error or a deflection from a Laurence Murray corner. The 2nd a towering header from at least 15yards from the young Will Dunstone after a corner was cleared and then put back into the box. I don't think Torpoint had to defend a single corner or offensive set piece in the first half, rarely even being in their own third. The 2nd half was different as Polperro pressed higher up the pitch and created numerous opportunities. The higher pressing lead to their first goal as a ball was laid back to the young keeper whose clearance ended up at the feet of the Pol striker. Although he had an empty net to aim at he was still a good 25yards out and had to hit the target. Torpoint hadn't really come out in the second half yet, possibly due to inexperienced mentality at being 2-0 up at HT. But they did regain that advantage when the left back got to the byline to cross in to the 6-yard line. The ball wasn't dealt with and the attempted clearance ended up in the net. Later in the half our defence got caught out of position to which Polperro took advantage of with a through ball into the space about 25-30yards from goal. A race between 2 Torpoint players and the Polperro striker didn't leave the attacker with a lot of time, who smashed the bouncing ball over the keeper into the top corner. I don't think he could've done anything else with it and it was of great quality. With little time left in the game Torpoint showed a young maturity and remained solid, to great relief at the final whistle. The only thing to note was one ref's decision which Polperro might feel harshly done by. A long ball over our top left a race on between striker and defender. One clipped the other to which they both go down, still quite away from reaching the ball. The ref showed a yellow along with a comment of "it wasn't obvious the striker was getting their first and there were other defenders in close pursuit." With that reasoning i think it was a fair decision. But if i'm honest if it was at the other end i'd be gutted. So it could've gone differently. Torpoint will be glad they've made it through after a though 2nd half and will gladly welcome back a full squad in the coming weeks. All the best to Polperro for the remainder of their season.
  15. Yes i do remember your entire outfield 10 in Maker's box but to my recollection their 2nd to make it 2-1 didn't leave you with a lot of time as that was a late goal. Regrettably it was a friend of mine with a decent looping header off of his polished scalp. I appreciate your response. Will be interesting to see how your attack fares against a defence of a higher division in your cup runs. All the best.
  16. P6s just a curious reader of your posts. An incredible record admittedly, but i was wondering how long you have been a Duchy side? Goals win games so surely you should be in a higher division than 2? I have watched you play once, in a 2-1 loss in an away game vs Maker. I'm not one to judge after viewing one game on a dreadful pitch. As i said, just curious.
  17. A very fair write up there Big Ern. Our equaliser was very very late but i felt it was deserved. A draw being the fair result from two decent teams who both had periods of the game in their favour. Thank you for the hospitality afterwards. Good luck for the rest of the season.
  18. Left Peg, I disagree that “all” of our shots were from outside the box. We turned up to the game in the right frame of mind and completely dominated for the first half. Despite the gulf in league positions, we showed you respect every team deserves and prepared well. 2-0 up at HT was not a true reflection on how the game had gone. Your keeper was superb and one save in particular was outstanding! The only problem you caused us was from one long goal kick I myself failed to deal with where your no.9 flicked the ball on well for a runner who put over. The 2nd half you clearly came out with a bit of hope that you weren’t out of the game yet, and that showed! That is definitely where I’d give you credit. A sub you brought on also changed the tide slightly and I think the lad was good. I wondered why he didn’t start the game. Lethargic defending gifted you a goal and fair play for creating it. From then though I don’t think you really pushed on. After that we took control again, creating a lot of shooting chances, with good build up and touches, particularly from our no.10. On another day he could’ve had a stupid amount of goals but it was not to be. With a lot of unavailable players today we only had the 11, so with no subs at our disposal we did tire. With 5 minutes to go, you again put a bit more pressure on us, creating one superb chance to level but our young keeper was up to the task and saved well. 2-2 will have flattered you & killed us, as I honestly think we deserved to walk away from this game with double figures put past you but we were poor in front of goal. If you play like you did in spells of the second half I don’t think you’ll struggle in the league this year so good luck for the rest of the season. If it bothers you who I am I was the no.2
  19. Duchy Premier Torpoint 2 - 3 St. Cleer After going last season unbeaten at home, a depleted Torpoint have lost their first home game of the new season. Conceding 2 from set pieces will need to be scrubbed out if we're to fulfil our own expectations.
  20. I disagree slightly with Cloughie's comment of 10 average teams. I agree the league has lost some class with the 3 teams who have gone up. But it was about time Fowey did after moving to a different pitch as well as being successful in the prem for a few seasons. The league is at a huge loss though with only 10 teams. Admittedly the league organisers couldn't have predicted Bodmin & Probus withdrawing, but a league with only 18 fixtures each will be poor. Without a good cup run the league could be over far too soon! Maybe they should've promoted an extra side from Div1, which will have 24 fixtures! I do still think there will be good football played over the season though, especially from Torpoint & Saltash. I would include St Stephen as well, but i'm not sure now that an above comment has stated they've lost players. But back to the inital topic. Torpoint host St. Cleer today at The Mill and I fully expect them to take the 3pts on home ground after being unbeaten at home last season. Lamerton vs Saltash should be a good game with 2 good teams going head to head. A win from the away side will surely show their intent and credentials to be at or near the top. St Stephen should have enough to beat Pelynt. However, with it being their first fixture compared to Pelynt's 4th, they may not come out of the blocks as quick. St Columb Major vs St Newlyn East might be a tight game. St Columb got stronger as the season finished last year so if they have maintained that, if this game doesn't end in a draw, that they will be the victors.
  21. With the squad Edgecumbe have started the season with they should be winning this league. However, to do this they need to keep all their players happy. With new quality signings coming in it might upset people who thought they'd be getting more game time. Will be interesting to see. The promoted sides of Fowey, St Austell and even Mevagissey at home will all be tough to beat. I imagine Bude & Plymstock will be up there or thereabouts as well.
  22. Although it is very early to predict, there is a lot of Duchy Prem experience in the league this year. With Fowey & St Austell both going up to ECPL1 I think it is wide open. St Stephen will be strong after dropping down a division, as will Pensilva, Saltash & Torpoint. Lamerton aren't an easy side to beat but I don't think they will be up there come the end of the season. Top 3 will be St Stephen, Torpoint & Saltash. Pensilva 4th.
