It is fantastic that some of the not so favoured clubs are doing well this season (I include St Austell in that as most of the squad are new and many wrote them off) with that comes a touch of reality. They all play good passing football with many good young players, built as a squad. With the hard boggy winter months coming and the injuries that always happen (each of the clubs mentioned have key players who if lost will affect the team results) and the simple fact some some of the more ‘senior’ clubs do have the pulling power, whether money / facilities / managers (leave you to decide) to supplement and change their squads - so in reality most will move up the table. What should now be clear though to these higher ‘ranked’ teams is that they need to look at the ethos  of the smaller clubs and stop looking at the same old names, many of whom are living on past reputation and start looking at the younger players building a reputation, which includes loyalty.

Firstly - credit has to given to St Austell, they play nice football with quick interchanges so the draw should not be seen as a massive failing by Helston. Second point was Helston have the players and backing to change things around, so whilst no fan I would not write them off just yet - they need to get going though or catching Saltash and Mousehole will become too difficult. Finally - last season SM made it clear (on several of his interviews) he didn’t believe in passing the ball around and his style, at this level was to get the ball to his strikers as quick as possible and it worked. That was before Hoops went there, so as coach It seems unfair to blame him for that style not working so far this season - I personally think he is an excellent coach but has to coach what the manager wants and it’s difficult to question the manager when he apparently controls the finances.

Camelford 0v0 Wadebridge (Camelford won 6-5 on penalties)
Pitch heavy but good condition and about 150 spectators.
Put together a big local derby, two in form teams and an FA Vase game and you got exactly what you would expect - both team fully committed and both team actually playing decent football. Camelford were better team In the first half and Wadebridge the better in the second half - helped by both teams having sin bins in each half. Overall either team could of won / lost and neither deserved to.
Penalty shoot out saw Camels score their first six and unfortunately Wadebridge missed their sixth - Camels through to next round.
A good game of local football - no egos, no big brown envelopes and lads who gave their all - and all stayed afterwards for a beer.
Sorry for Wadebridge and look forward to the league match
Let’s see who the draw gives Camels.

Raider - I think you will find that Piran Films are employed by Helston which is why they video most of their games. It would be great for all clubs to video matches but most don’t have the finances / volunteers with equipment to do so.

Ha ha, Orders from whom? Been quiet because all this vitriol towards Helston Football Club is both tiresome and unwarranted. Is it really such a crime for an individual to spend his money how he sees fit? Who is it hurting? The way some of the idiots on here go on about Mr Massey and his players, you would think they were Jimmy Saville reincarnated. I get he is not everyone's cup of tea but some of the conjecture and comments are no better than a Disney script.

Paul - unfortunately I was in Bristol on Saturday so couldn’t do a report on the Camels v Penzance game. I know Gus scored the two for Camels - one each half and the Penzance scored just before half time. I also know that Reg changed the team around a bit and the weather was appalling - but I don’t want to be disingenuous to Penzance who have hopefully turned a corner and will start getting some decent scores and points.

    Saltash 4-2 Camelford
Played on a lovely surface (considering the rain today) in front of 140 spectators.
Strange one to do a match report on, as playing Saltash you know it’s going to be tough and usually with a mindset of probably losing - but tonight I left Saltash feeling deflated that Camels did not get at very least a point and a win would not have been undeserved.
Saltash have two strong central defenders and they play the ‘long ball” over the top to good strikers with willing runners. They are also strong on set pieces.
First half was fairly even with Saltash having three good chances - scoring two of them, whilst Camels had several half chances without really going close 2-0 HT
Second half was virtually all Camelford - getting one back through Bobby. Then from a rare venture into the Camels half Saltash won a corner and a Camels defender headed into his own goal when not under any real pressure. Camels pushed on and made it 3-2 with an Ed header. It was all then Camels pushing for the equaliser, however from a Camels corner  a partial clearance saw the Camels midfielder fouled  but not given by the ref leaving a break away by Saltash and a lovely finish, 4-2. Camels kept pushing but finished at that. You could hear the relief with Saltash who knew they had been in a close game - slightly ruined by the Saltash manager running the length of the pitch to cheer in front of the Camels bench - real class.
Camels dominated possession, had total control of the midfield but lost - that’s football and well done to Saltash who play to their strengths very well.
The ref was one who I usually rate, but felt he let things get away from him a bit tonight - just a personal opinion and I am sure he called it as he saw it, which is all you can ask.
Genuine best wishes to Saltash at the weekend - I am sure all true Cornish football fans will be behind them in their FA Cup game.

Really needed comment? The guy as an ex pro and someone who gives everything whilst playing and developing / coaching young players would walk into any team in the league. He may be ‘loud’ on occasions but I would just suggest if you have such personal views you take it up with the player in person rather than a forum.

    St Austell 2-0 Newquay
A game of men against boys and the boys totally outplayed the men. I know Newquay were missing some key players but their midfield couldn’t / weren’t allowed to put two passes together - very poor. St Austell were too quick and played good passing football - scored a goal in each half and had three cleared off the line.
I had tipped Newquay for a top 3/4 finish - but not on tonight’s performance.
    Well done St Austell.
Att was 193 and the ref was his usual self.

    Wendron 1-8 Camelford
Underlane looked fabulous and you will struggle to find a more welcoming club.
Don’t like match reports where it is too one-sided and I expected today to be  tight game .
In short - Camels dominated, helped by a flying start, Ed scored within a minute - followed by Matty scoring a cracker 2-0 halftime, but could have been a lot more  Second half - another by Ed and two goals by Connor finished game at 5-0 . Camels switched off and poor defending allowed Wendron to score, 5-1 . Obviously upset the Camels who scored 3 quick goals - Tom(2) and Denholm .
Very impressive performance by the Camels against a decent Wendron team.
Top of the table - looking forward to Wednesday v Saltash

Well said - Newquay looked very good (from the highlight - which are normally Helston centric)

I pride myself on telling the story of a game objectively and take issue with the above remark.. If Helston win a game 5:0 as they did on the opening day of the season it is difficult not to feature more action from Helston. Where visiting teams have genuine near misses I will endeavour to include them. Anyone who was at the Newquay game will, I hope, feel that I have been evenhanded with my selection of clips. In fact I was guided by my commentator’s notes.

Well said - Newquay looked very good (from the highlight - which are normally Helston centric) and you can’t beat pace with quality out wide. What did surprise me is Newquay looked like they controlled the middle of the park as well - I do think Helston have gone for reputation rather than quality in the middle and it again looked like that from the footage.
Any team with Goldie / Slates / Buchan and especially Tucker is going to score goals and anyone who thinks Helston are not the team who romped away with things last season (other than Saltash) - will I feel be wrong.

SM said several times in interviews last season his style is to get the ball to his strikers asap to score and again his strikers will press any team playing from the back - what seems to be missing is when other teams do the same back.
Two good teams who imo will be part of top 4.

    Camelford 3-0 Callington
Another win and clean sheet for the Camels. Camelford dominated the first half and on another day Gus could have scored 3/4 before the break, but for some uncharacteristic finishing. Callington’s main threat was set pieces and a bit of sloppy defending could have resulted in Callington sneaking a goal - but 0-0 at halftime.
More of the same second half with Camels finally scoring from a back post tap from Leighton. Callington still posed a threat, same problem but game was settled via a good run and cross from Ed for Gus to finally get on the sheet with a tap in. Gus finished off the scoring following a run from Boxy - who squared the ball at the same time as he was badly taken out in the box for another tap in - Callington player was a bit lucky as it probably would have been a straight red had the goal not gone in. Final score 3-0
Camels are playing some good football  picking up valuable early season points.

Callington do have good players and can pose a threat but they did look very down - hopefully for them they will pick themselves up and get their season going.

Congratulations to The Ashes from all at Camelford - keep the flag flying.

Dave - would be interested to know who wrote the text - I assume it was a DM to you. Shame they didn’t post it themselves. The forum is about opinions and for most of us they are genuine opinions as to how we saw things and that rightly includes good and bad about players and officials - as they are part of the match day experience, for which we pay good money. Please keep giving your opinions - at least they are in your name.
I wasn’t at the game so can’t and wouldn’t comment on the incident - but I would ask one genuine (non Mousehole or Helston supporter) question of the refs out there:
if a player pushes a defender - foul (albeit a lot not given) and as a foul could warrant a yellow card. If the defender then hits the goal keeper who falls badly (and as I said early really glad Corey is feeling better) - does that make it a red card - viz does Commission of a foul vary as a consequence of the seriousness of the injury - forget the reckless element as you could never up hold that through an intermediary ie pushing the defender so as to recklessly endanger the goalie?
