Foxhole 0 Hayle 2

Saturday 27th March 2010

Foxhole's recent good run ended abruptly with a second successive woeful performance against Hayle, whose clean sheet was only threatened once Griffin had belatedly been summoned from the bench on the hour. Until then, the visitors had dominated, without ever looking like they were going to score a sackful while, at the same time, giving the impression they could always step up a gear if necessary. The first half had been particularly nondescript, with little goalmouth excitement, although Holland was required to tip onto the bar Magee's header from Pugliese's seventh-minute centre. Unfortunately, the keeper was less decisive nine minutes later in dealing with Laity's left-wing cross, and Wolstencroft cleverly despatched the opener with an overhead kick from twelve yards. Hayle remained in charge until the break but created nothing else of note, while Nicholls' deflected effort was all that the desperately disappointing Foxes could muster.

The second period began in similar vein, and the visitors doubled the lead after 56 minutes when Carpenter headed Magee's centre into his own net. This at least prompted the arrival of Griffin to inject some much-needed energy, and almost immediately Cheal had to claw away Pinhammer's free-kick, while Rowe nodded Carpenter's deep dead ball over the bar. However, Hayle also created chances, with Stephens crossing for Magee to volley straight at Holland, and, following a rare flowing move, Laity's attempt with the outside of his right foot was well saved. Late on, Griffin twice found himself clean through, but he was unable to beat Cheal on either occasion. With eight minutes left, Pugliese, having earlier been booked for pulling Ansell's shirt, received a second yellow for dissent, but it was too late to affect the outcome.
