Newquay AFC XI v Penryn Ath Combo

Recommended Posts

Penryn were applauded off the Mount Wise pitch by the Newquay supporters, after gaining a well deserved 2-1 win. Jim Hilton has used several youngsters in pre-season and tonight was no different. Penryn were well organised, hard working and for 44mins outplayed The mix bag of Peppermints, so they were disappointed when Robbo scored just before half time. The Scot was put clear through in the box and obviously thought he was off-side as he stopped, looked at the Lino who had kept his flag down, before stroking the ball past the keeper. For all the good play that Penryn showed, it was rare that they actually trouble Payne in the Newquay goal. Winno was even quieter in the away goal, could have used a deckchair.

Newquay made 4 or 5 changes at half time, another bunch of talented 16 year olds graced the field. The home side looked a better opposition for Penryn and began to give them a game. Winno almost broke sweat at one stage, although that was more to do with a stray back pass rather than any Newquay threat. The Peppermints did create a few chances but it was Penryn who got back into the game with a well worked goal. They continued the pressure until 10mins from the end when Newquay forced 3 corners in a row and eventually a golden chance fell to Robbo who managed to head over from 3 yards with the goal vacant. The vistors got a well deserved winner just before the final whistle when the ball was squeezed home from the tightest of angles.

Jim Hiltons experiments with youngsters is a breath of fresh air, but some of the tactics are confusing, not only to those watching but apparently to those playing as well. St Day are the next visitors to Mount Wise next Friday at 7.00pm, it is hoped that a more settled side will be on show, one that may resemble a first team that supporters recognise.

Well done again to Penryn, a good bet for a top 3 position in the Combo.
