Porthleven 2 Foxhole 0

Tuesday 28th September 2010

Foxhole slumped to a second successive defeat after a promising first-half performance, their inability to convert presentable chances proving crucial. Within two minutes, Friendship raced on to Rowe's flick only to drag his shot wide before the same player ran on to another Rowe assist, but his decision to shoot early allowed third-choice keeper Kew to gather easily. Kew's nervousness was plain to see, but he was well-protected by eager defenders, particularly when Gardner bravely blocked a Bird thunderbolt, while he was able to watch Rundle's spectacular overhead kick sail harmlessly over. In an entertaining opening period, Porthleven too, always seemed capable on inflicting damage, especially down the right where Robinson was proving a tricky and speedy customer. The best opportunity fell to Thomas from Stidwell's unselfish square pass, but the finish from ten yards was woeful, while Timmins' deep cross was then tamely nodded over by Lawrence.

Alas, backed by an ever-increasing breeze, the second-half belonged to the home team. While Rowe largely had had the better of his first marker, he was to have less joy with Gardner's replacement Adlard, and, other than Friendship's drive which was deflected wide, the Foxes rarely appeared likely to beat Kew. On 65 minutes, Timmins' inswinging corner was smartly headed home by Thomas for a goal which had been coming; seven minutes later, Stidwell raced clear before toe-poking wide. The miss was not crucial as, within two minutes, Searle, recently booked for fouling Hayhurst, doubled the lead after a one-two with Thompson. Thomas almost made it three near the end, but his effort from Robinson's centre struck an upright.
