Foxhole 2 Newquay 3

Saturday 9th October 2010

Foxhole slumped to their third defeat in four games, conceding all three goals to set-pieces, but will feel their endeavour warranted at least a point. With a fierce wind blowing across the pitch, Newquay settled the faster, with Weldhen teeing up Robertson inside four minutes, but the diminutive Scot blazed over from twenty yards before playing a clever one-two with Palmer, whose shot was similarly wayward. However, Friendship soon created opportunities for both Bird and Griffin, albeit without unduly concerning Barnes, before Griffin, fresh from yet another booking for fouling Middleton, struck the base of an upright from twenty-five yards with the keeper scrambling. Although Holland produced a fine save to deny Weldhen, the visitors' best chance of the half came moments before the break when McKune's low centre was just missed at the far post by the onrushing Hartigan.

Within seconds of the restart, the Foxes took the lead through Whetter's penalty after Dean had tripped Griffin. Regrettably, Newquay were level within six minutes when Hartigan's quickly-taken free-kick from the edge of the box deflected off Rowe to completely wrong-foot Holland, and they were then to enjoy their most productive spell. Following cautions for both Ralph and Rowe for fouls on Robertson and Dean respectively, and a free-kick from Palmer which crept narrowly wide, it was little surprise when Hartigan's inswinging corner was met by the head of the unmarked Ward on the hour. On sixty-nine minutes, more static defending allowed Middleton to bundle home another Hartigan corner kick, the scorer almost immediately having his name taken for a poor challenge on Hazeldine. To their credit, Foxhole made a decent fist of climbing the mountain before them, and reduced the deficit with eighteen minutes remaining when Bird's corner was needlessly handled by Hartigan to give Whetter the opportunity to despatch his second penalty, this time in the opposite corner. Sparked further by the introduction of Rundle, who had a late effort cleared from the line by the impressive Bunt, Griffin's follow-up attempt then being hacked away by the omnipresent Hartigan, Foxhole strove valiantly to get back on terms, but their hopes evaporated when Bird's late drive flashed just wide.

Foxhole (3-5-2): Ryan Holland; Adam Holland, LeeWhetter, Bradley Ralph; CJ Bird, Scott Laughton (sub. Daniel Jennings), Brandon Tregidgo, Lee Hazeldine (sub. Aydan Rundle), Kyle Friendship; Mark Rowe, Richard Griffin.

Newquay (4-4-2): Ryan Barnes; James Ward, Ashley Bradshaw, Joff Bunt, Jodie Dean; Scott Palmer (sub. Daniel Carne), Jake Hartigan, Sam McKune, Sean Middleton; Luke Weldhen, Paul Robertson.

Referee: Mr Lee Roberts.
