Newquay 2 Foxhole 0

Saturday 23rd October 2010

Foxhole started brightly against the wind and may have scored twice inside twelve minutes, but Kempthorne was unable to keep down his 18 yard volley, while Rowe's header from Friendship's outswinging corner also flew high over the bar. Friendship was soon chopped down by Middleton to earn the Peppermints' midfielder a caution, but not before the referee's advantage had almost allowed Douglas to poke home from a tight angle at the near post. However, the Foxes were unable to maintain this momentum and the home team began to exert some pressure on a rearguard including Rowe alongside Ralph and Adam Holland, who were dealing comfortably with some unimaginative attacking until the referee somehow deemed Hazeldine's challenge on Robertson worthy of a free-kick which the otherwise anonymous Palmer fired low into the net after twenty-six minutes. Weldhen then failed from twelve yards to double the lead following a good cross on the run by Bradshaw, while Rigby's daisy-cutter flashed across goal just before the interval.

Griffin's belated appearance briefly offered belief that Foxhole would pose a greater menace in the second-half, his physical presence in the box immediately presenting Friendship with a half-chance, but Payne was to remain largely redundant, his defensive colleagues easily handling a surfeit of fairly aimless long balls. With more composed finishing Newquay may have sealed the points long before their eighty-sixth minute second from Robertson, who fired home from close range after twisting and turning cleverly in the box. However, Ryan Holland was again in fine form, twice denying Palmer before bravely blocking at the feet of Robertson, who had earlier tamely shot wide at the far post.To general bemusement, the mild-mannered Kempthorne was booked for unsporting behaviour, while Hazeldine saw yellow for fouling Robertson, whose name was also taken for playing on after the whistle. The visitors knew it wasn't to be their day when, four minutes prior to conceding the killer second, fervent appeals for a penalty after Bradshaw had clattered into Douglas were waved away, and, in stoppage time, a rare flowing move saw Bird, Laughton and Friendship combine to release Griffin, whose effort, alas, threatened only the Mount Wise allotments.
