Okehampton 8 Foxhole 0

Saturday 30th October 2010

It all began to go horribly wrong inside thirty-three seconds for the woeful Foxes when Ralph was outpaced down the right by Squires, whose dangerous low cross prompted Egan to trip Sanders for a penalty which Ferguson slammed home. Only a fine last-ditch challenge by Adam Holland prevented Okehampton from almost immediately adding a second through Walters, who, alongside the equally speedy Nomah-Koneh, were to prove far too elusive and mobile for the visiting rearguard all afternoon, even after a ninth-minute switch to 3-5-2, to no discernible effect. Nomah-Koneh soon released Squires, whose finish from a promising position was weak, but it mattered little to Argyle as, after eighteen minutes, Alden raced away and chipped onto the bar from the edge of the box for Walters to smash home the rebound.

Cutlan tried his luck from distance and Friendship headed Rowe's centre too high before cutting inside Williams and forcing Geering into diving action as Foxhole attempted to fight back, but Nomah-Koneh made it three on twenty-five minutes, racing on to Wren's pass to beat a shell-shocked Ryan Holland, who was then relieved to watch Walters miskick when faced with an open goal, before saving well with his feet, again from Walters following unselfish play by Ferguson. While Geering easily gathered Friendship's chip and Rundle shot wide from a narrow angle before failing to connect with Laughton's inviting cross, the slicker home team always looked like increasing their lead and notched their fourth on thirty-eight minutes when Walters pulled the ball back for Ferguson to find the net from six yards. Three minutes later, matters got even worse when Walters latched on to Nomah-Koneh's pass only to be fouled by Ralph, leaving the referee little option other than to brandish red.

The Foxes' ten men managed to hold out until the fifty-fourth minute when Squires fired home from twelve yards after Ryan Holland had brilliantly denied Nomah-Koneh's initial effort. Walters' shot was then deflected onto the woodwork before, on the hour, the lively striker made it 6-0 after his pace left Rowe trailing. Rundle, fresh from being booked for kicking the ball away, soon set up Friendship who at least tested Geering, but there was no respite as, on seventy minutes, the totally unmarked Walters flicked Wren's free-kick into the corner from close range for his hat-trick. Two minutes later, Walters again sprang an unconvincing trap before being halted by a fine tackle from Rowe, but more unselfish work from his partner presented him with a second chance which he converted, albeit from a position seemingly miles offside, Mr Oldaker over-ruling the flag. The Foxes were too weary to argue, probably contemplating how they were going to negotiate the final eighteen minutes without further embarrassment. Okehampton, though, were apparently content with eight, and nearly conceded a consolation to a drive from Kempthorne, the recipient of a foul by Squires whose subsequent caution was the game's concluding noteworthy incident.
