St Blazey and St Austell will be counting the cost of the local derbies being called off. First of all the first meeting in the senior cup game was due to played on a friday night whick would have pulled in a good crowd and now the festive meeting after a few years now wiped out!!

So......when will we every see football again????? :(

Well its 5 Degrees here in South Devon as I type, so perhaps a lot of games could of actually been played tomorrow ?

However hindsight is a wonderful thing .. We took our Son back to Birmingham this morning (left at 8 am ) and the car was showing minus 13 between Exeter and Taunton and never went above minus 7 the whole way !

I had to pick someone up in Kingsteignton yesterday afternoon and it was -3 at 1pm, could'nt believe it, especially when the Met Office had said it was warming up..!! Much better today though, there is a slight thaw which has got to be good.

Bodmin have volunteers working on the pitch and are very hopeful of the match going ahead.

The match referee will have a look at the pitch when he arrives.

Penzance leading 1-0 against Falmouth at the half-time break.

Matt Shiels getting the goal a couple of minutes into the six minutes injury time played after Penzance 'keeper Danny Burrows got stretchered off after only a few minutes of play. Glad to say that he recovered enough to walk back to the changing rooms - muscle spasm in his lower back. Phil Willey has gone in goal.

The goal came about after Danny Magee quickly lobbed the ball back towards the Falmouth goal after Jason Chapman failed to clear the ball as effectively as he should have done!

A second half revival by Town as they finished 2-1 winners after trailing at the interval.

They levelled the contest 20 minutes into the second half when Matt Drummond was put through for a one against one on the stand-in Penzance goalkeeper Willey. There was only ever going to be one outcome with Drummond coolly finishing to make it one apiece.

Then ten minutes later skipper Mark Vercesi hammered home the winner from all but on the goalline. Johnny Ludlam's free-kick which hit the cross-bar was never cleared and after a six yard box skirmish, the ball bounced off a player for Vercesi to make sure of maximum points for Falmouth.

Falmouth 2 Penzance 1

Tough conditions for both teams , very heavy pitch and ice in parts. Penzance goalie went off with an injury early on, but his deputy did well.

The away side battled well and got the lead with a great goal, after a mix up in the Falmouth defence.

But two second half goals for Falmouth gave them the points.

Draw may have been a fair result but it was a battle in the mud.

Jamie Dirrane was solid at the heart of the Falmouth defence with Vercessi.

Good crowd and goos support for Penzance.

Falmouth V Penzance

Good Game down at Falmouth even with the state of the pitch.

Lots of action including a scrappy winner, with many complaints for offside. These complaints were correctly waived away by the Ref and young lino who noticed that the last two touches were by penzance players. The first flicking the free kick towards his own goal. This brought a great save from the PZ GK on to the bar, which fell for the Fal striker goalhanging on the line.

Good Game

Unfortunately you are always on to a loser against mother nature and playing today on a still thawing pitch will put the pitch out of action for two weeks, aslong as temperature increase. This is because the recent frost has caused grass metabolism, cellular growth to be non existent so recovery from the St Dennis game has been ZERO. The only way the pitch will recover probaly in this situation is now to harrow when dry, and give it a rest and hope temperatures will rise to aid some recovery.

I just wanted to say about playing on winter pitches in bad conditions. I dont make out to know everything.

Credit first of all to the groundsman for getting the pitch to the state that even considering staging a game on it was possible.

The two photos were purely an indication of how the playing conditions were in the middle of the park (which lets be fair is always going to get more cut up than other areas) at the start of the match, and how it was at the end.

From purely a spectator's point of view, I would say that the referee was right in playing it, obviously from the groundsman perspective, the ref was chancing it. It would be interesting to know what the players thought!

Personally, I think we protect the pitches too much these days. After all - the pitch is there for playing on, not for looking all nice and pretty with green grass all over it, all the time!

Dave, some valid points there and unfortunately you cant have a bump free, green grass pitch if you want to play on it every week in bad conditions. im not here to win gardeners world im here to get games on and do enjoy the challenge. UP THE TOWN

It was a tough game & credit to Penzance I felt that PZ were the better team in the first half & fully deserved their lead,

They seemed to adapt to the conditions better than Falmouth,

Who were finding it hard to pass the ball to each other, they gave it away many times.

some of the Falmouth passing even allowing for the conditions was to say the least poor, PZ were finding their men better,

& although Falmouth won the game if it had been a draw that would still have been a fair result.

Hammers :c::huh::c:

PS No groundsman could have prepared the ground any better than

what was done at Falmouth.

Still plenty of work to do

Be interested to know Mark how much time you've been able to get out onto the pitch and what type of work has been done on it?

Knowing Mark I will wager that it has taken him the best part of 15 manhours to get the pitch back to this state.

The Hayle pitch was bad enough, but fortuneatley most of the damage was surface, 2 hours with a hand fork for the worst divots, then a run over with the rotary mower, yes the grass has grown minutely. After that a run over with the chain harrow to restore most of the levels and then another run with the rotary to give it a finished look. Still got to go again with a bucket of soil and the hand fork to fill any divots that have escaped. Then a final marking for Mondays Game. I guess Mark will do the same. My time 8 hours, Marks more like 20. So next time just spare a thought for us, as Mark says we don't want to provide lawns, but we still have pride in turning out a decent surface, for players and spectators to enjoy football.
