Newquay AFC v Godolphin Atlantic - Good Friday Noon.

Recommended Posts

With the 'G' looking to pip Camelford to the title and Newquay needing to salvage some pride, Mount Wise is the place to be tomorrow at Noon.

With the weather we have had, the pitch will be rock hard, unlike the mud bath of last season, which would no doubt have been called off but for the 'groundhoppers'. There are usually goals galore so get to the ground early and enjoy the best bacon baguette in the SWPL at just £2.

No parking for supporters (unless you have a club pass) at the ground or on Reeds Way where clampers will be loitering as usual.

Biggest derby game in the county???? You having a laugh????? What about Saltash/Liskeard, St Austell/St Blazey, Bodmin/Wadebridge etc...

Todays official attendance at Mount Wise was 401, enough said !

Great game by the way, two sides determined not to lose but The Peppermints bossed the 2nd period.

It was a great game, fast paced, and a real turnaround in the second half in the way Newquay conducted themselves. Would love to have heard what Jim said to the boys in the changing room at half time.

Finished uploading all the photos and the video of the action to the website here - http://www.cornwall-photos.com/subcat/11445/newquay-v-godolphin-atlantic

Did the "G" keeper borrow that kit off his 12 year old brother

Also the one above looks like a tough tackle lol

Cheers! Enjoyed covering it as usual!

Poor old Shaun, it seemed like the Newquay lads had it in for him during the first half - he was grounded twice by some over-ambitious attacks!

Judge will be adding his photos on over the next day, so will have even more angles of what happened - probably the most photographed game in Cornwall today!

Newquay 2 - 1 Godolphin

The form book went out of the window as returning defender Andy Morris secured an important win for Newquay in the popular local derby at Mount Wise on Good Friday.

Following a quiet opening spell, Godolphin's Kyle Brown shot wide from the edge of the area and talented Newquay youngster Dan Carne looked to create space on the Newquay right with both attacks failing to trouble the opposing defence. The first genuine opening came after ten minutes when Godolphin 'keeper Shaun Semmens launched a long ball which eluded Ashley Bradshaw in the Newquay defence and fell inviting to Jamie Wigg, who contrived to lift his finish over Ryan Barnes and wide of the target. Newquay appeared rattled and Barnes almost gifted an opener when his clearance stuck Godolphin striker Lee Paxton and flew agonisingly wide of the target.

The game sprung into life and within a matter of minutes Paxton saw his long-range strike repelled by Barnes and Dan Carne's appeals for a penalty were waved away following a collision in the Godolphin area. Tensions were beginning to rise when Luke Weldhen collided with Semmens as he gathered a bouncing ball; Sam Eglington headed over the Newquay crossbar and within a matter of minutes Newquay's Jake Hartigan also failed to hit the target with a presentable headed opportunity.

Over four hundred spectators looked on as Paxton raced through on goal only to be thwarted by a fine stop from Barnes and an offside flag from the assistant; Newquay's quick counter attack could also have resulted in the opening goal when a fine run and deft cross from captain Shaun Middleton was driven wide by Hartigan, who was unaware of the time and space available. With just over five minutes of the half remaining, a moment of finesse from Godolphin's Jamie Wigg resulted in the opening goal of the game as a flowing move on the Godolphin right culminated into a smart through ball that Wigg took in his stride and unleashed a stunning strike on the volley from the corner of the box that flew in at the near post with Barnes helpless. The celebrations amongst the Godolphin team indicated how important this local derby is to the players, with Godolphin competing for a place at the top of the league.

Newquay players appeared frustrated and a firm challenge from Weldhen on goalkeeper Semmens was adjudged to be a foul, with Weldhen rolling the ball into the empty net with Semmens out of the equation. Weldhen collected a booking for his troubles and Hartigan also found his way into the referee's notebook for dissent. As the first half drew to a conclusion, Godolphin almost carved out a second when Wigg headed over from Paxton's corner and when Phil Lowry found himself one on one with Barnes in the fifth minute of first half injury time, Godolphin would ultimately rue the missed chance as Lowry's lofted finish bounced wide of the target.

At this stage, despite a fairly open first half, it was hard to see a way back for Newquay after a frustrating first half. Jim Hilton, who has since announced his intent to step down from his first team role at the end of the season, must have made his expectations very clear as Newquay made a positive start to the second half with Hartigan at the centre of three moves that pushed the Godolphin defence deeper and deeper. Lowry relieved some of the pressure with a twenty-five yard strike that sailed wide and Newquay fought their way back into the game within six second half minutes when Hartigan poked the ball home from six yards after a goalmouth scramble. Godolphin looked rattled and within a matter of minutes Newquay had forged a lead. Shaun Semmens denied a great goalscoring opportunity and Weldhen's follow up header looked destined for the net until the ball struck Eglington on the back of the head, deflecting onto the crossbar and out for a corner. Andy Morris, who had been recalled to add some experience to a youthful Newquay defence, made a smart run to the near post and somehow managed to squeeze the in-swinging corner past the defender on the post to give Newquay a deserved second-half lead.

With half an hour remaining, Godolphin, as they so often have done this season, needed to drag themselves back into the game. Centre-back Ollie Pinnell tried his luck from twenty five yards and substitute Josh Harris tested the Newquay defence by injecting some much needed pace into the game, only for Newquay's Joff Bunt to crudely break up play with a late challenge when Godolphin had men over. A fine move on the Godolphin left, started by Tom Shepard's accurate pass that rolled along the touchline, resulted in a fine ball from Paxton that Harris smartly allowed to run into the path of Brown, who was thwarted by a last-ditch challenge. With just over a quarter of an hour remaining, it appeared that Godolphin had managed to find an equaliser when Wigg's stunning overhead kick sailed over Barnes and onto the crossbar, striking Lowry and rolling agonisingly wide of the far post with the goal at his mercy. With Godolphin's attacking intent clear, gaps were appearing in the away defence and late substitute Paul Robertson almost added a third when Semmens dropped an in-swing cross, with Robertson smashing the rebound over the bar.

More fine work from Josh Harris should have resulted in an equaliser when Scott Flanigan arrived unmarked at the far post, sidefooting wide of the target with just over ten minutes remaining. Weldhen could have wrapped the game up but was denied by another fine save by Semmens and Kyle Brown found his way into the notebook for persistent foul play having been frustrated by Godolphin's inability to retain the ball and force an opening. Godolphin were unable to get the ball back as the referee added on second half stoppage time; Middleton's clumsy challenge presented Godolphin with one last opportunity and Semmens' long clearance was flicked into the path of substitute Ollie Dart, who was through on goal and had the opportunity to grab an unlikely equaliser in the 94th minute. Dart got his shape wrong and watched on as his slide rule finish beat Barnes but not the far post.

Following the resulting goal kick, the referee brought the game to a conclusion, much to the delight of the Newquay players who had secured an important three points over their local rivals.
