Michael Rabone
Godolphin 2 - 2 Camelford A fortuitous late equaliser from substitute Lee Paxton was enough to share the points at Godolphin this afternoon, with opponents Camelford edging ever closer to SWPL Division One West title honours. Early encounters were relatively uneventful until Godolphin defender Tim Peacock sliced his clearance straight into the grateful hands of goalkeeper Shaun Semmens in the sixth minute. Camelford appeared relatively happy to sit back with a fairly routine long-ball game and it wasn't until a quarter of an hour had passed when Marc Gusterson reminded the home side of his capability with a smart strike from distance that curled marginally wide. Within a matter of minutes Camelford had forced a corner; Godolphin failed to clear and with plenty to do, Gusterson's quick touch and outstanding volley into the top corner endorsed his status as top goal scorer in the league with a high quality finish. The goal appeared to create a positive response from Godolphin, with Sam Eglinton heading wide and Phil Lowry holding the ball up well. Gusterson was presented with a great opportunity to extend the lead when the ball dropped to him on the edge of the Godolphin area and having surprisingly dragged his shot wide of the target, Godolphin countered and their pressure was soon rewarded when Kyle Brown turned inside the six yard box and smashed home from close range after a goalmouth scramble. Godolphin were in the ascendency late on in the first half with Lowry and Eglinton pressuring the Camelford defence and Jamie Wigg was presented with a great opportunity to edge Godolphin ahead until a smart block from the Camelford goalkeeper resulted in a corner that came to nothing. Another quiet start to the second half quickly changed when Gusterson, who was at the heart of everything positive that Camelford created, side footed over from fifteen yards when well placed to add to his tally. When Gusterson experienced a quiet spell in the second half, Camelford's attacking threat was significantly diminished, with the away side happy to absorb Godolphin's counter attacking style in the knowledge that a point was a relatively favourable outcome. The introduction of substitute Josh Harris provided Godolphin with an extra dimension with some smart moves across the Camelford back four and Godolphin were looking capable of beating a Camelford side that had only lost one match previously. With just under ten minutes remaining Gusterson provided another moment of quality, expertly turning the ball home from just inside the area after the ball had broken loose in the box to reinstate Camelford's lead. Godolphin have shown a great deal of spirit this season and have often turned losing situations into points and it was no surprise when late substitute Lee Paxton found room on the right wing, lofting a deep cross to the far post that eluded the goalkeeper, who was left scrambling as the ball sailed into the top corner. With insufficient time to fashion a late winner, Godolphin's title ambitions may have faded, with today's point allowing Callington to take second place in the league, however, Derek Martyn and his team can be very proud with the quality of football and their collective spirit this season. Godolphin play host to local rivals Newquay on Monday at 11am and will hope to take all three points following the recent 2-1 reverse at Mount Wise on Good Friday. On a slightly different note, I thought the referee did a fine job, letting the game flow and communicating well with players. I don't recall a single card being issuing which reflects that nature of the game.
Mr unorthodox
Truro 1 vs 3 Plymstock Murdoch x2, A.Pook. Murdoch with a shot come cross that flew over the truro keeper. Truro capitalised on a A.Pook mistake at the back to equalize, but then A.Pook made amends and put us (plymstock) back in the league with a finish from a murdoch cross. Murdoch finished the scoring with a mazey run beating 3/4 truro players to then chip over the keeper. Rollercoaster season for us this year, 2nd from bottom with 5 losses at 7 then went unbeaten untill new year putting us top briefly. Now resting 7th! David Bray
A bad day at the Office. Firstly Argyle lose at Exeter for the first time since 1993 and relegation is postponed untill Monday. Onto Poltair where St.Austell are well and truly put through the mangle by Torpoint. Onto cricket at Wheal Eliza where St.Austell Cricket first X1 are humbled by visiting Callington. Off to the 'Pier House' now for coupious pints of Doombar. Should dull the pain... ....

Somebody must like them upstairs If Elburton finish in the bottom two this season , it will be the first time that we have escaped relagation due us not getting the required points needed to stay up , not the second . I agree with you about why the League was formed and it's a poor show from Budleigh but a possible massive let off for Elburton , maybe new rules could be put in place for next season that teams who have the step 6 facilities like Budleigh who finish 1st or 2nd in their division should be made to go up , like it or not . As happy as I am that Elburton are not going down , I feel a bit for Stoke , who are desperate to go up and are spending a massive amount of money on Getting the Ground in order , Having two teams finish above them with no ambition to go up must be very annoying . ozzellfan
Dan Nancarrow and Chris Phillips were missing today but otherwise a full-strength side. St Austell started brightly and missed at least 2 good opportunities before Shane White gave Torpoint the lead in the 13th minute. St Austell equalised on 16 minutes through Neil Slateford before Josh Grant was allowed a clear run on goal to give the visitors the lead after 27 minutes. The second half saw Torpoint score three goals in a five minute spell with Adam Carter scoring 2 goals and Josh Grant scoring his 2nd goal of the game, the goals coming in the 50th, 51st and 55 minutes. Adam Carter scored his hat-trick on 71 minutes and Josh Grant scored his 3rd and Torpoint's 7th goal on 80 minutes. St Austell were reduced to 10 men shortly after when Martin Giles was sent off following his 2nd yellow card of the game. It was probably St Austell's worst second half performance this season and I am reliably informed by Robbie Morris that Torpoint's 111 goals this season are a club record, beating the total achieved in 1981/82. St Austell have a home game on Monday against Ivybridge and the small matter of a local derby against St Blazey on Wednesday evening to draw their season to a close. The Lillywhites still have a chance of finishing in 6th place but overall finishing in the top half of the division and reaching the Senior Cup Final in their first season in the Premier Division is something all Lillywhites fans would have been very happy with at the start of the season. Hopefully these two games will attract a decent crowd to Poltair Park.

They have no floodlights, no stand, barly any hard standing and yet they will stay up because the clubs above them have worse facilities or wont accept promotion. Pathetic. Its harly a step up like the Western league is it!! I just dont no why clubs bother playing. The new league set up will be just as stale as the old SWL if this carries on. Don't knock a club for upgrading the Ground slowly , it would have been nice to put lights in and have the stand built at the same time as spending £40,000 on building a pitch that met the league spec but it was not possible . The Footings are dug out for the stand now and work will start on the Lights this summer . I agree that the bottom 2 should be relagated but it's not Elburton's fault if Budleigh have messed the league around , is it ? Perhaps Budleigh should be made to go up . Adlestrop
A devastating blow for Stoke, who overcame the loss of Mr.Gartell better than expected. One thing puzzles me,however: the CSWPL can now allow a club from the Cornwall Combination/ECPL to enter even if they finish in THIRD place(if a SWL reserve teams stands in their way). Surely the CSWPL top brass can find a way to promote THIRD placed Stoke!Or is the main priority to increase their numbers?

Give them the trophy, but take the prize money away. This was the reason why this league was formed so that Clubs go up and down after each season. Elburton Villa for the 2nd time in three years escape relegation. Somebody must like them upstairs Disgusting! Cannot believe Budleigh have not learned their lesson. I would expect to see a mass exodus and Budleigh right down the bottom of the SWPL East next season. An utter joke which makes a mockery of this excellent league. They should be very, very heavily fined. I agree what a farce, would never see this at other levels of football. What is the point of Budleigh and Liverton entering the SWPL west if not wanting to progress as a club. They should start next season with a heavy fine or a points deduction
Adlestrop
Would it be too drastic to make Clubs refusing promotion to be relegated instead?
CoachKT
What happens if Callington catch Camelford and nick the SWPL Div One West title? Would they be denied promotion due to their facilties and Wadebridge also then stay in the SWPL Premier??
Dave Deacon
I think the two clubs are on equal footing when it comes to seeking promotion. The SWPL have already stated :- "Callington Town : Recommended subject to dispensation Camelford : Recommended subject to dispensation"

No. Callington have passed the ground requirements "subject to dispensation" which is exactly the same as Camelford.
The Villains
Its just not Budleigh refusing to go up........ look nearer the Premier league, When / who was the last premier team to take promotion to the Western league? Should the premier league get its house in order before knocking other clubs for not taking promotion?
Dave Deacon
I think someone has already suggested it, but the "new" league could already be suggested that is becoming stale! Perhaps any club that declines promotion within the set-up (Premier and Division One) should be subject to a points deduction for the next season. The League has been let down by its members! Argyle Fan
You can understand the reluctance of teams to join the Western League as so many of their clubs are in the Bristol area. However, should promotion between Peninsula East / West and Premier now be made compulsory to avoid the ridiculous situation which has arisen with Budleigh? If teams from East & West find the Premier not to their liking for whatever reason then surely they can get relegated to return to their comfort zone? Are there other leagues at the same level in the pyramid which have this rather bizzare voluntary promotion system?

hoppit
This farce begs the question : "What has the CSWPL done for the benefit of football in Cornwall?" Absolutely nothing aidiestrop, we need all Cornish leagues from Step 6 downwards with compulsary promotion for 1st and 2nd places, this would encourage the clubs with ambition to attract the best players. Argyle Fan
From the Peninsula League website: "Whatever happens in life, including in football, there are usually two sides to any situation. None more so than the matter of Budleigh Salterton and promotion to the next league. We at Budleigh Salterton try to act in a responsible way in relation to all things. This includes the financial well being of the club which is of course not ‘just’ a football club. The situation we faced was that to play in the higher league would require additional financial support. We were also aware that the existing sponsor was at the end of his three season contract and unlikely to be able to renew. We have been making an earnest endeavour to obtain fresh sponsorship for several months. We had a date by which application for promotion had to be lodged. Should we give up on sponsorship search on that date, or lodge the application and continue the search? We chose the latter because an untenable situation would have been that we did not apply and later found the financial backing we sought. The company secretary (Mr H) was aware of the situation from day one because we had to clarify our position should we not proceed with the application. Disrespect of the league and its officials – Not Guilty. From a North Devon resident, and others:- Quote: Have to feel for Stoke Gabriel who WOULD of taken promotion. Agree with whatever let them have their trophy but NO PRIZE MONEY. I disagree with those who suggest they should be presented with the runners-up trophy but forfeit their cash reward.....as they should receive neither for their disreputable behaviour. The people playing for Budleigh Salterton earned their runners up reward, those playing for Stoke did not quite make it. Do not blame Budleigh Salterton for the league rules, propose a change. Disreputable behaviour – Not Guilty. In this part of my response I have assumed that the words “would of taken” should really read “would have taken”; the word ‘of’ has many qualities but none to fit that usage. Over the years many football clubs, at many levels, have found themselves in difficulty, or even going under, because they have over stretched their finances. At Budleigh Salterton the officers of the club will not allow this to happen if it is possible to prevent it. The managerial staff and players are, and always were, aware of this. Always thought that teams / players wanted to play at the best standard as possilbe to SEE how good they really are. Promotion SHOULD be compulsory and if they dont take it should have the prize money withheld and have a points deduction for the start of the next season. hoppit
I think teams playing at level 7 should be automatically promoted, otherwise whats the point of the pyramid. I support a small town club with limited resources who have a good chance of promotion from div 1 west which was beyond it's wildest dreams at the start of the season. The club feel they owe it to the players and supporters to give it a go, if promotion comes will not expect to set the prem on fire but will put the wind up some of the more fashionable clubs. Consolidate a mid table position in the first season then assess the situation, and press on [hopefully]. This is the ambition of a smalltown club with limited resousces Mr Brett. hoppit
Where can i see lists of top goalscorers from west and prem? Mark Gusterson [Camelford] is div 1 west leading scorer with 32 goals ,needs 1 more to break the league record.
Sheikh Mansour
There is a simple way to sort this whole situation out which is to move Okehampton back to play in the east league (where they geographically should be) and move another team up from east cornwall/ combination to fill the gap in the west league. It's such a shame for teams working hard to move to the next level who have the facilities to do so but are being blocked by so many barriers in their way and teams above them seem to not need the facilities the rules say they require.
