Foxhole 0 Wadebridge 0

Tuesday 23rd August 2011

Foxhole maintained their unbeaten record with a hard-fought draw against fancied Wadebridge, but were made to sweat after fading in the second half after a promising opening, ultimately grateful that the visitors had left behind their shooting boots. Nevertheless, the Foxes battled hard amongst the general blood and thunder and deserved their point on spirit alone before a healthy Goverseth crowd.

The early stages appeared to indicate a possible repeat of Saturday's goal-fest as Foxhole quickly took the initiative, Thomas' fine early cross only just eluding Upton, while Gamble turned Dan Cox inside out before firing over from twenty yards within the first two minutes. It wasn't long before Upton displayed typically clever feet inside a packed area only to be denied by the diving Vercoe who was soon happy to watch Spaul's piledriver flash over, but the poor execution of dead-balls let the visiting back four off the hook far too regularly. Vercoe was equal to Gamble's left-footed effort and Adam Holland flicked a header wide but by then Wadebridge had begun to assert themselves and May's tricky run down the right caused alarm before it petered out amidst a host of defiant defenders as the influence of Cudmore and Beesley intensified. Shortly after Spaul had been crudely upended by Witts to earn the left-back a deserved caution, Upton released Gamble, whose fierce drive stung the hands of Vercoe, the final action of a breathless first half.

Unfortunately Foxhole were unable to maintain their momentum on the restart and Vercoe was a virtual spectator for the remainder of the match. Poole found himself clear on two occasions, firstly bizarrely opting to pass and then shooting straight at Holland, who had to be alert to deny the unmarked Paul Cox's header. Both Cook, hitherto the appreciative recipient of some generous heading practice, and Mewton saw yellow for dissent, and was soon joined in the fussy referee's book by Gotthardt and Thomas for fouls as the match continued to thrill, but goalmouth excitement was at a premium prior to the belated introduction of the bustling Cunningham, who ought to have clinched the points late on only to delay pulling the trigger, allowing Stephen to block.

Foxhole (4-4-2): Ryan Holland; Adam Trudgian, Ben Thomas, Adam Holland, Joe Stone (sub. Ryan Stephen); Jaydon Gotthardt (sub. Orrin Crowle), Sam Kenny, Lee Hazeldine, Ben Spaul; Adam Gamble (sub. Aydan Rundle), Duane Upton.
