Godolphin 2 Foxhole 2

Saturday 1st October 2011

In blistering heat the battling Foxes hung on gamely for a deserved and welcome point, scoring two splendid goals courtesy of their latest striking partnership. Griffin's opener inside ninety seconds came after a fine turn on Pinnell and a thunderous drive which flashed past Semmens at his near post, but the lead lasted literally seconds as Paxton converted Whigg's deep cross. Semmens did well both to push aside Holland's effort and to deny Griffin with his legs as Foxhole attempted to regain the initiative, but, soon after Brown's fierce header had been brilliantly tipped over, Flannigan made it 2-1 from eighteen yards, his rasping shot following great skill to wrongfoot Thomas. Paxton was his usual lively and combative self, Ryan Holland twice excelling to prevent the experienced forward a first-half hat-trick, first by spreading himself well at the near post and then by again tipping over a bullet header. However, the home team's shaky rearguard was clearly struggling to cope with Griffin's unique brand of aggression, the marine spurning a couple of opportunities to equalise, while there were promising signs that the arrival of Cunningham may soon help to ease the pain of the departed Upton, so the break was reached with everything to play for.

The Foxes repeated their earlier trick by scoring immediately on the restart, Rundle and Griffin combining for Cunningham to fire past Semmens from the edge of the box. Regrettably there were to be few occasions when they threatened a third goal as Godolphin took control as the visitors wilted in the sun, but at least they were able to withdraw the most affected, the dug-out being crammed with six substitutes. Paxton remained the most dangerous customer, thumping one attempt against the bar and another against the frame of Holland, before finally seeing a shot hacked off the line by emergency right-back Hazeldine, who had earlier been harshly cautioned for a challenge on the unusually ineffective Brown. He was to be joined in the book by both home full-backs, Dart for clattering into Stephen and Laughton for a wild kick at Spaul as Godolphin became increasingly frustrated at their inablility to make their dominance count and may have been made to pay further when Griffin raced on to a bouncing ball late on but was unable to trouble Semmens.

I think you mayve forgot to mention that you were a "village side" today and with a "fraction of the budget" Darin. Come on, your report wouldnt be the same without a slight stab at the opposition or an element of bitterness!!

All the same, well done Foxhole, a great result regardless.
