One choice as their SWPL Team of 2015

Recommended Posts

Not sure how many would have seen the following which appeared in the Plymouth Evening Herald over the New Year period?

It’s their Sports' SWPL Team of 2015.

It’s some team and anyone would have to go to better it. However, feel free to suggest yours.

“Talking to managers, officials and fans across the divisions, there is barely enough room in a whole newspaper to mention all those who have made a mark over the last 12 months, but what is abundantly clear is the talent on show in the Peninsula League.

Some of those who just missed out on a place in this select XI include experienced Bodmin goalkeeper Kevin Miller and his fellow glovesman at St Austell, Jason Chapman. Winger Liam Parnell has caught the eye at Torpoint, as has Saltash midfielder Dave Trott.

The striking department was naturally extremely competitive and a special word for this quintet, who would grace any team at this level. Joe Bushin has been excellent for Exmouth, Liam Eddy is a major presence for St Austell, Lee Doel and Mark Goldsworthy have been lethal forIvybridge and Helston respectively, while Sam Hughes has enjoyed sensational form since returning to Saltash.

GOALKEEPER

Josh Oak (Ivybridge Town)

This young goalkeeper has built his growing reputation on fantastic reflexes and Oak fits the bill as an outstanding shot-stopper. His major problem has been work commitments limiting his game-time this season. Working with an experienced manager like Nicky Marker, Oak is improving on his kicking all the time and his handling is very solid, but there is no doubt his vote comes from making great saves.

RIGHT-BACK

Nick Hurst (Bodmin Town)

This teenage full-back has made a massive impact for Bodmin after signing from Falmouth, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet for manager Darren Gilbert.

Hurst is an expansive full-back, who catches the eye with his desire to get forward, while also combining the essential defensive attributes of being brave in the tackle.

CENTRE-BACK

Martin Giles (St Austell)

A proper, old-fashioned centre-back, Giles is the player you take into the trenches for battle as the 24 year-old is happy to run through brick walls for his team.

Giles is rarely beaten in the air and his strength is a menace to strikers throughout the league. He also represents a serious goal-threat from set-pieces.

CENTRE-BACK

Warren Daw (Tavistock)

Daw is a versatile defender for Tavistock and in his mid-20s, so a player coming into his peak. He started this season in centre-midfield and moved back into defence to cover some injuries for Tavistock.

Daw is a great reader of the game and that attribute adds to his excellent pace to create a formidable defender. He is also very good in the air and a key figure in Tavy's form over recent months.

LEFT-BACK

Josh Robins (Tavistock)

A tremendous speed-merchant, Robins is a player comfortable at wing-back or left-back. His express pace enables him to bomb forward in sizzling fashion from full-back, going past players with ease.

Josh is also blessed with an excellent left-foot and naturally catches the eye because of his attacking instincts, and, as a player in his early 20s, he can only get better.

RIGHT-MIDFIELD

Jamie Lowry (Godolphin Atlantic)

His pedigree says everything about Lowry and while injury problems curtailed his professional career, the former Chesterfield and Plymouth Argyle midfielder remains an ominous force in the Peninsula League.

Lowry is more often seen in the centre of midfield these days, but more than capable of causing problems down the right, and he has been a major factor in Godolphin's title push this season.

CENTRE-MIDFIELD

Shane Krac (Bodmin Town)

Krac has been superb for Bodmin in their push for the title this season and possesses all the ingredients required to be an influential midfielder.

He is strong in the tackle, with good distribution and also physically powerful. Krac is a typical midfield dynamo, blessed with great energy and enthusiasm. His past record includes a stint at Truro, which shows the quality of player Bodmin have in their midfield.

CENTRE-MIDFIELD

Ollie Brokenshire (St Austell)

A powerhouse in the St Austell midfield, Brokenshire can be relied upon to bang in around 20 goals during the season, which is a priceless commodity coming from the engine room.

Every team in the Peninsula League is aware of this huge presence in the midfield and Brokenshire adds to that with his industrious approach. He also possesses an excellent left-foot and a vicious shot. Aged 24, he can only get better.

LEFT-MIDFIELD

Neil Slateford (St Austell)

A technically gifted footballer, Slateford is the type of player who is comfortable anywhere across the midfield. A hardworking player and very adept at using either foot.

Although not the tallest of midfielders, his turn of pace is superb and the 25-year-old is renowned for having a very accurate strike from distance, as well as being a good finisher in the box. Quite simply, a class act.

STRIKER

Levi Landricombe (Plymouth Parkway)

An incredibly dangerous striker for Parkway, the recent departure of Landricombe to Tiverton Town in the Southern League will be a major relief for defences across the Premier Division, although this rapid forward remains signed on at Bolitho Park.

Landricombe learned his trade with Holsworthy and Elburton Villa, building his reputation at Parkway as a lightening quick striker who plays off the shoulder of the last defender. His partnership with Mike Smith has been a major component in recent successes at Parkway.

STRIKER

Andrew Neal (Bodmin Town)

Racing away at the top of the scoring charts, Neal is arguably the most obvious choice in this team and his record speaks for itself. Neal joined Bodmin from Tiverton in September and has been a revelation ever since.

Blessed with great pace, Neal also has superb skill and one of those players who is simply born to score.”

Not to many arguments there to be honest but can't believe Kevin Miller who is arguably the best keeper this league has ever seen and still is can't get in this side. No disrespect to Josh Oak who is a top shot stopper but the likes if Miller, Chenoworth and Chapman are a step above.

Phil is a good player but not a out and out striker but hes a team player and a great Captain , but there are really 3 out and out strikers Rocky Neale Levi Landricombe and Liam Eddy you dont see these players helping back in defence much they just score teh goals Phil is always helping his defence and i couldnt see him leaving Godolphin because the club is like 1 big family there Tanyas Boys

I ant believe that Josh Oak has got that spot.  For Me Miller, Chapman and Semmens are the top 3 keepers in that league.

I would also question Warren Daws selection. I didn't even think he was a Centre back? What does that say to Landricombe and Coulton.  I also think that Lewis Russell at Saltash is a much better centre back than Daw, Russell is a top top defender.

Some odd selections there.
