Here's one for Big Al, for years the CCFA were breaking their own rules. The ruling for the Cornwall Senior Cup stated (similarly to what it says now) that the final would be staged at a neutral ground to both clubs. This being in their rules, right up until (I think) the late 1950s, St Austell could be 'at home' in the final. There was clamour from almost everywhere to move it around the county but the CCFA steadfastly refused until said rule was pointed out. "Fanfare" who wrote in the Cornish Guardian could have been Big Al in his younger days for all the criticism that was printed. He pointed out that Penzance, Falmouth and Newquay all had grounds that were suitable (and flatter than St Austell). Bodmin too was suitable but with the council having more power at calling off games than the match referee, it wouldn't get a look in.When they finally caved in and took the final to Penzance, it proved to be a real success and a lightbulb seemed to flash over CCFA headquarters. In modern times, Saltash, Wadebridge, Hayle and Liskeard can all claim to be final venues and with new and improved facilities, I could see Helston, Camelford, Penryn and even Wendron being considered in the future.

You will like this also- Cornish clubs over rule the CCFA

Up to 1951 all Cornish senior clubs competed in the Cornwall Senior Cup by way of playing in two divisions with the winners of the West  Div. contesting the Final against the East Div.winners.

7 rebel clubs (St.Blazey,St,Austell,Newquay,Saltash United,Penzance,Falmouth Town and Truro City) were instrumental in the formation of the new South Western League and informed the C.C.F.A. they would not be competing in the Senior Cup.....The County F A had the power to ban them from football if they did not affiliate to play in the Senior Cup

Looking at the CCFA rule book of the day it stated that No club could be forced into playing in any league-which in effect the Senior Cup was competed in a league formation.

With guidance from the F.A. the Cornwall County F A fell in line with all other County Associations to contest the Senior Cup on a knock out basis for the 1951-52 season which has continued ever since.

It would be interesting to know how easy the Devon clubs got around to this new South western League set up.

18 hours ago, BIG AL said:

I went to St.Austell in the late sixties to see the senior cup final and quite honestly I can remember shoulder to shoulder all around the ground.

You've prodded my memory there big Al, it was the senior cup final at Poltair that had the 4,000....not Falmouth.

Yes shoulder to shoulder alright - when football was good, and fun had by all.
