FA Vase Round 3

Team Solent 1 Bodmin T. 0

admission £5-00 (good) programme £1-00 attendance 100 h/c

6th in Wessex Prem v 4th in SWPL, both with games in hand.
Good game - the feeling here before the game was that the visitors were favourites, despite Solent being a level higher, but the home team got a very early goal and battled really well for the result against a very good team, who were also extremely good at whinging. The ref was....variable.
The only goal came after 28 seconds (Gary's watch). The ball came to Waller-Lassen on the right who beat the defender several times, then found an excellent cross which picked out Thorn at the far post, and his header beat keeper Moore who should have done better with it. The visitors were quickly into their game after that, some nice passing but they met with some stern defence from Solent, who were dangerous on the break themselves. Bodmin's Matthews had a shot blocked, Ash had a shot well pushed over by Banda, who then made a great reaction save as Hopcraft's shot was deflected. The home team put together a patient passing move which ended when Wiseman shot wide. Sullivan had a couple more shots for Bodmin, whose top scorer Carter was more a provider today, setting up Martindale for a shot which Banda saved well with his legs. Solent should have scored when a great cross saw Mitford running onto header which he put just over the bar. But at half time it was still 1-0.
After the break the home team appeared to tighten up and although Bodmnin had as much of the ball as in the first half, they found it harder to create chances. Solent still looked dangerous on the break, Mitford shot over when well-placed and Waller-Lassen ran clean through but Moore saved well with his legs. Midfielder Ash had several chances for Bodmin, all went over the bar. In a classic home break Waller-Lassen set up sub Sheedy for a header but Moore saved at his near post. As we approached the end Bodmin's attacks grew more frantic, Banda made another great reaction save after a scramble, Solent defended heroically, and then the final whistle went to great celebration. Best Vase run ever for the home team.
No changes at Test Park since my visit in August, still the two small stands with round roofs, plus the small stand to the side of one goal. One tea bar next to the stands, and a comfortable bar in the changing complex. The pitch didn't look as good as usual, but it played superbly.

Congratulations to Exmouth on their result yesterday, flying the flag for the SWPL. So its just the league & domestic  cups for us to concentrate on now. Solent a good side

Another- he game has been well covered here by the aforementioned BB and HantsLondoner. Hats off to you both for finding so much to say about a game that I thought was poor. Maybe they just concentrated more than me. The only meaningful action came in the first minute when a header, which appeared to be going wide, crept in. Don't know or care who scored it, just glad someone did. A late save from the home keeper saved us a further 30 minutes, for which I was very grateful. Felt colder today than I did last week.

If the game never hit the heights, the atmosphere didn't get off the floor. Call me an old romantic (or shameless stereotyper) , but I rather hoped Bodmin would have a large following of ruddy faced sons of toil, who would consume vast amounts of ale, provide rowdy vocal encouragement for their heroes and entertainment for the rest of us. Sadly the crowd of 100 or so seemed to consist entirely of officials, relatives and hoppers.
