Ian Pethick
Was interested to read that Tavistock are aiming for a top four finish in order to secure promotion to the Western League, and also have a longer term plan to aim for the Southern League. Read piece in Herald last season in which manager Stuart Henderson outlined reasons why they couldn't look to gain promotion, these being expense and players being unable to commit to the travelling. Was interested in what is behind this change of strategy.
Rob1978
Was told that clubs were reluctant to take promotion in the past, as they thought that they would get relegated to Western division one if things didn’t work out; and that having been assured by the Western League that they would drop back into swpl if relegated, some clubs were more positive about taking promotion. If that is the case I worry about the intelligence level of some of the people running those clubs!

gingerninja
Great news for local football, another team in Devon looking to go up. I wonder if we'll ever see a current Cornish side take promotion? The more clubs that go up, the less travelling there will be
Dave Deacon
Can only see the likes of Saltash possibly toying with doing so. For all the others either ambition or costs will prohibit.
gingerninja
Why can't the others? The more that go up, the less travelling needed plus playing at a higher level. No brainer really. Too many teams want to be the big fish in a small pond, using budgets bigger than most western sides in order to not progress at all! As a business model is completely wrong
sportsman10
what wrong with them having ambition . i am sure they are going to walk the league easy with that squad of players , but it will be a fight again to keep players for a go at the western league as the travelling does put them off , parkway have much bigger finances to make the travelling worth it to the players 1 hour ago, Dave Deacon said: Can only see the likes of Saltash possibly toying with doing so. Soccerkid
Or perhaps the national FA who are the richest in the world could do more to help clubs with travelling costs especially as the southwest is out on a limb a bit .

Rob1978
Some clubs play Western premier without a playing budget! The fact is that clubs not taking promotion will soon find themselves in a second rate county league with the Swpl split. Bodmin/St Austell will soon find themselves in a league with no Parkway, Tavi, Argyle and possibly no Saltash. These games will be replaced with games against village teams. Will it still be worth putting up a big playing budget to win that league year in, year out? Of course not! Cornish clubs are disadvantaged geographically but they also have the advantage of no football league clubs to compete with, and barring Truro (who recruit a lot of players from Devon) no senior non league teams. There are players out there who will take less money to play at a higher level. It was good to see the article in the Indy on Saltash. The club have finally worked out what marketing is. They just now need to start thinking about slowly improving their ground like others have done. Look forward to seeing Tavi and maybe Saltash host western league football in the near future
sportsman10
Saltash are a big club but for some reason they can’t get the crowds of a parkway or even a Tavi. Massive job on the marketing guys hands to get the people back into saltash.

A pointless league system where the same teams win it year in year out without being tempted
TheolderIgetthebetterIwas
Simple solution, move Cornwall up the country, and a host of clubs would take promotions.

Hate to tell you this Big Al but that Step 6 all Cornwall clubs division will still be part of the SWPL! And below that is planned a Step 7 League to be overseen by the Cornwall FA who you also don’t agree with! You’ll have to set up and run something yourself perhaps? scousemouse
Personally, I think this restructuring is a step backwards. Why not have a Western League with its most easterly point around Bridgewater? Further east another league!
