FRIDAY EVENING FOOTBALL – MOUSEHOLE v ST AUSTELL

Recommended Posts

Posted as received from Andrew Large, Mousehole AFC

One of the genuine heavyweights of Cornish football visit Trungle Parc this Friday (3rd August, kick off 7pm) as St Austell become the third SWPL Premier Division side to feature in Mousehole’s pre-season programme.

Admission is £2 (£1 concessions, accompanied under-16s free), the clubhouse is open from 6pm, and PASTIES WILL BE ON SALE (!) supplied by Lavenders of Penzance.

St Austell can boast an impressive recent reputation, having in the last three years won the Premier Division, the Cornwall Senior Cup (twice) and the SWP League Cup, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the national FA Vase.  Last season The Lillywhites finished a modest 6th in the League but are expected to put in a stronger showing this campaign.

Mousehole are putting together an improved squad with the aim of increasing the chances of moving up from Division One West this season, having finished fourth in the league table and two points short of promotion in May.  In their pre-season friendlies so far, they have lost narrowly away at Newquay (2-1) and beaten Callington Town at home last Saturday (4-1).

The last Mousehole v St Austell encounter was the memorable Cornwall Senior Cup semi-final at Helston on 7th March, in which The Seagulls upset the odds against their higher-division opponents to record a thrilling 3-1 victory after extra time, with Steven Ziboth scoring both Mousehole’s late goals - and he was on target again in the win against Callington last Saturday.

St Austell’s last venture to West Cornwall was on July 20th, when they won 4-1 in a PSF at Penzance, who had recruited five Mousehole players during the summer.

Another PSF against Premier Division opposition takes place at Trungle Parc next Tuesday (7pm) when Mousehole entertain Helston Athletic.

Mousehole’s League programme starts on Saturday 18th August with a home game against Plymstock United (3pm), for which entry is FREE.
