Luke Gibbons
Torpoint AFC 1-2 Newquay Reserves After a gap last week it was good to welcome the side back to The Mill. Some players returning with a few missing out on the squad. A late illness to Captain, Mike Heron, was a miss but an opportunity for someone to impress. We started the game well, continuously moving the ball between defence and midfield whilst looking to release Halls and Franklin where possible. Half chances from Robbins flew just wide on a couple of occasions. The deadlock was broken from a corner which was won initially by Carter, then to be nodded in by Copp. We managed to limited clear cut chances at the opposite end before an absolute worldie from Preston caught us off guard. Take nothing away from the strike but to be critical, we'd have like to see someone get out to it. 2nd half was very even with, again, half chances for both sides. Approaching the final 10 minutes, both sides sniffed 3 points. Preston again causing issues and putting us under pressure. Chances did arrive the other end for us. Babb headed over from 5 yards, Ross with too many touches close to the keeper. However, credit to the Newquay #1, Peters, who made 3 huge saves late. Twice from Ross and a strong hand from Blair. The latter proved key, from the resulting corner, we were unable to contain the initial break and when Coleman found himself unmarked to make it 1-2, the Newquay team celebrated en-mass (as expected). A real kick late, again... credit to Newquay for riding a small wave late and to take the win. Preston, for me, the standout player on the pitch. Caused multiple problems throughout. On the official, this time not the man in the middle but the Newquay Club Assistant. He was superb throughout. He constantly applied the laws of the game and would wait to see how play would develop. 2 occasions stood out where 1. Our player was offside on a tight call with another player proceeding which could have skewed the view. 2. Where the Newquay line stopped for an offside where it could've easily been given but his flag was firmly down. Darin Morse
Saturday 23rd September 2023 Foxhole 2 (Peers 82, Rickard 88) Hayle 4 (Rennard 8, Irish 8, 24, Williams 44) In a carbon copy of the Liskeard game in August, Foxhole narrowly failed to overturn the significant damage incurred in a first half defensive meltdown. Hayle started very brightly and went ahead when Rennard sneaked in at the far post to convert a mis-hit effort by Irish, who, seconds later, fired home himself from twenty yards. The Foxes attempted to mount a fightback, but the excellent visitors were adept at denying any space in their own half. As a result, Hendy was a virtual spectator; by contrast Prynn was soon beaten again when he was able only to parry Hicks' fierce free-kick into the path of Irish. When Williams bagged the fourth from distance just before the break it looked all over, but spirited Foxhole went on to dominate the remainder of the game. Numerous chances were spurned as Hayle suddenly looked vulnerable, particularly when Rickard was introduced as an auxiliary striker. Damerell struck a post from in front of the stand, Hendy brilliantly saved Rowe's free-kick and headers from Coates and Damerell, while Bould saw an effort cleared from the line before Peers finally struck low into the corner. Rickard's thunderbolt at the death was the least they deserved, but mountains are extremely difficult to climb. Foxhole (4-3-3): James Prynn; Tim Peers, Luke Damerell, Angel Coates, Reece Davies; Aaron Beresford, Zach Smith-Brokenshire, Levi Kerrigan; Benno Bould, Courtney Rowe, Lee Reed-Bennett. Subs: Nathan Allen, Lee Rickard, Chris Kilbey. Hayle line up to follow. Well played the super Foxes. Good luck to Hayle. Many thanks to Ashley Morris and the visiting lino. Martin Hunn
Doms 6 Penryn 3 A return to the Intermediate Cup yesterday after making the final of last year’s competition, saw us progress to the 2nd round of this years competition with plenty of goals shared at Lovells. Little to seperate the sides in the opening half hour apart from an early Alex Jacob strike, similar to his goal from last week, cutting in off the left and finding the far corner of the net. Probably our best team move of the half saw Taylor Gerry have a good chance to double the lead saved before Penryn took advantage of an intercepted pass to break and equalise going in to half time. Fort the restart a lapse saw the Penryn striker taking advantage to go though on goal put the visitors 2–1 up. We did respond immediately though, breaking through and Callum Brown side footed us level, before a few minutes later from a similar position inside the box, showed composure to put us ahead. Our fourth came from a set piece with John Styring winning his header and Harvey Barrett finishing from close range. A hard working display from Francis Pengelly was rewarded when his run and shot across the goal went in off the inside of the post for five. The sixth goal came when Toby Morgan’s cross deflected high in the air and Kieran Ryall was in the right place to head in. A bit of a drop in concentration but an excellent ball across the edge of the 18 yard box saw the Penryn striker again make no mistake for his hat trick, to reduce the arrears, but a 6-3 win in the end for the Doms to secure a 2nd round place. Many thanks club president Brian Jones for sponsoring the game and he chose Taylor Gerry as man of the match. Best of luck to Penryn for the rest of the season. Foul Throw 3
Polperro 3 - 5 Torpoint Athletic Torpoint goalscorers: Easterbrook x2, Westall, Small, Boyle. A good cup win sees us through to the next round and our 5th win on the bounce, with a tough visit from St Dominick to come on Wednesday to test the resolve once more. The game on Saturday never really looked in doubt once we'd opened a 2 goal lead inside the opening 10 minutes. A nice crossfield ball from Westall into the area found Easterbrook and the home keeper coming together with Easterbrook coming out with the ball to roll into an empty net. Unfortunately this left the Polperro keeper in a spot of bother and looked in pain until he was subbed off later in the half. Hopefully a speedy recovery. 5 minutes after the 1st a pacey corner in from Taylor was met by a strong downward header by Westall for 2-0. By 20mins it was 3 and a neat through ball again Westall the creator found Smallsy in behind, in time and space to slot under the keeper for 3-0. By this point we were cruising and creating a variety of chances and moving the ball well, but Polperro's Whitebrook reduced the arrears from at least 25 yards smashing one in from the right hand side, one that "stayed hit" and would've required a worldy save if Sidey had any chance of stopping it. Great strike! We moved the ball well for the rest of the half, particularly on the right hand side between Westall, Small and Taylor and the biggest threat was those 3 finding each other time and space to switch to Easterbrook who was harshly caught offside quite a few times. Late in the half we made it 4 from another set piece, this time a Smallsy inswinger was met by Boyle for his 1st of the season. 4-1 HT. The game was put to bed further soon after the restart with the new Polperro incumbent misjudging a through ball and Easterbrook showing good technique to keep the bouncing ball low into the net from 20yds. Former Liskeard man Gwillam reduced the score line again around the hour with another fierce effort from 20+yds. The first goal I can understand, you almost think "let him shoot from that far out" but this one despite it being another good strike I'd have liked us to close it down with a bit more desire with it being more central, but no arguments about the quality. By this point we had introduced all 5 subs and though they imposed themselves and continued to get on the ball we created less chances going up the slope. Smallsy found himself 1v1 again and fired over the bar and a great cross from the right hand side was spooned over the bar by the head of Rothwell where we should have scored from both or at least hit the target. From overall play we did deserve to score more than the 5 and being brutal 5-3 flattered Polperro a little. Their 3rd was down to desire from long standing skipper Lane as he was the strongest attacking a corner to head in to the net. Unfortunately for the home side they miss the likes of Patterson and Thomas who have moved to Dobwalls 1st Team. Not sure when the draw for the next round is but there's still some games to be played. Hopefully a home draw or away somewhere I/we haven't visited before and an excuse for a coach. Onto Wednesday. The Badger
Wadebridge 2nds 1 - 3 North Petherwin Petherwin Goal Scorers: Sanders, Stainer, Reeve Rescheduled cup game as Wadebridge 1's were in the vase. We travelled with a lite squad due to work commitments which was compounded when our keeper Tom Coles less than two hours before KO saying he was running late in the tattoo parlor 🤬. We tested a couple of the lads out in the warm up and Brandon Stott was the chosen one to step in between the sticks. We started positively and kept the ball well but were just lacking that intensity going forward. Our first goal came around the 15 minute mark when Alex Williams dispossessed the RB who was shielding the ball out for a throw on the left wing, he then drove into the box and cut it back to Sanders who opened his body up and curled a lovely shot into the top right hand corner from 16 yards. Nerves settled... still no sign of Tom. From here we really stamped our authority on the game against a young home side and soon after made it 2-0 when Owen Pennington's free kick from 22 yards came off the crossbar and was smashed home by the onrushing Stainer. From here we looked in complete control with Stott having nothing to do other than a few pass backs. The hosts then clawed a goal back completely against the run of play... I missed the build up as Tom had finally arrived so was helping him get ready but from what i saw when walking out the tunnel it was a hopeful ball from wadebridge which was being dealt with by Pennington until the wadebridge winger stamped on his ankle/foot and took advantage of Pennington being out of action on the ground to make 2-1. Referee said he didn't see it which was disappointing. The home side rallied for 5 minutes until we got a soft penalty for a push on Shadrick in the box which was coolly converted by skipper Reeve. The second half if being honest was pretty boring, we dominated the game had chances to extend lead, Williams could have had 2 or 3 but wasn't clinical enough although encouraging he is back to creating chances and was voted MOTM. After being knocked out in the 1st round away at St Day last season it was nice to secure a place in that 2nd round draw. Dave Deacon
