Ah the  wonders of the Septic Tank known as social media , where you can send messages to dead people and insult people under the cloak of anonymity . He seems a decent enough man but he can only work with what he's got . People say his tactics are boring  , but so are many of the other teams tactics , particularly in the Premiership .

So  who's next for the poisoned chalice .?

Thought he would.

Why put up with the level of personal abuse directed at him and also drinks containers aimed in his direction by people most of which know as much about football as my dog.Social media and the so called pundits were against him until we reached the final then changed their tune!

What personal abuse has Southgate had to put up with?  I can’t remember anything

In my opinion he has underachieved with the squad he has had, at best he’s par for what’s expected.  He’s only beaten one notable nation in a finals and that was Germany he’s lost or drawn all the rest.  He’s proven that he’s been tactically inept at that level for years!

Soccer Follower has specified exactly that. The throwing of drinks containers at him was absolutely ridiculous and irrelevant of the result on Sunday I believe this was one of the reasons he was going to resign.

There was also been some personal attacks by pundits and social media too. Granted they are allowed an opinion on football matters but some of this has gone beyond it too.

Yes we have a lot of talent, but not the god-given right to win every trophy. Players need to shoulder some of the blame too for some of the poor performances.

I’ve not seen any personal abuse. What Taylor and Hodgson experienced was personal abuse.

I agree that there were big games when indecision and a reluctance to gamble cost us / him dearly, ( Not against Spain because they were far far better than us )  but I'm still not convinced our players are as good as they think they are. Many of them play at clubs where the best players are foreign and our media - particularly the red tops - would have us all think that player a is " world class " and player b is " world class " when the reality is they are nowhere near that level.

In this particular tournament Southgate  showed far too much loyalty to Kane but dropping your captain is a tough decision. Nonetheless he should have made it.  Kane's  understudies may have injected a bit of life into a tiring side but they will probably never attain the level of Kane at his peak .

Defensively we aren't up to much and there are a couple of  players there that can probably retire now.  I assume the new manager will base a side around Bellingham but I fear that some of the publicity may have gone to his head - We'll see

Anyway - I'd be astonished if the new manager gets half the " success " that Southgate did.

Should listen to some of the national football phone-ins!

Ah. I stay away from those.

I'm not sure how anyone can abuse the man personally.  He’s done a great job at uniting a squad.  It’s just a shame he tactically wasn’t up to it

I firmly believe had Klopp or a peak Alex Ferguson been in charge then England would have had 2 trophies in the cabinet.

We got our wish...lol !

To be fair to Southgate, he done well , with the players we had.

Southgate , was a possession based, ball playing centre back.

This showed in England's style of play.

Many fan's criticism,  was the slowness of England's play at times and how deep they were.

Inviting pressure and chances for opposing teams.

Playing some of their best attacking football,  when 1 nil down!

Gareth Southgate,  was the highest paid manager at the euros, at £5 million a year!

Make of that statement,  what you wish...!

We had just been knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland and were a laughing stock when Southgate took the job 8 years ago. 4 tournaments later we’ve reached a World Cup semi final. a European championship final, a World Cup Qtr final and another European Championship final!!! How can that be criticised? Anyone who thinks we got a devine right to win tournaments just because we’re England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is a bit deluded I think!? 🤔🙄  Well done Southgate👏🏼 maybe the next guy can get us over the line one day hopefully or maybe we’ll go back to not qualifying for tournaments or getting out the group!?!

Similar thoughts on what I was trying to say on my " sun came up " post . The media have , or seem to have , this great obsession  that we have this god given right to win everything at football and if we don't it's a disaster I think it's also a commercialism thing , companies build up a football tournament  in an effort to sell more alcohol  , ice cream , St. George flags etc etc . We do well in others sports but this is overlooked because we've been brainwashed into believing that we are the best at football  so should win by right . Even the other home nations are largely ignored by the media .

A comment on Brian Moores post .

When I started playing adult  football ( 60 + years ago but seems like yesterday ) a n ex professional told me  " there are and always will be good players playing in a team of poor players that make him look bad , but there are poor players playing in a team of good players who make him look better than he is . Does this apply to England .?

Always remember Frank Lampard being criticised for his performances for England compared to Chelsea, he under performed. Response was he had better players around him at Chelsea, most of whom were not English, of course. Update to say Jude Bellingham?

All the TV critics have to take a good look at themselves as they all said in one programme or another that Southgate wasn't up to it. I don't think any of the Top managers want to manage a Countries team as I believe they all want to manage in the Champions league and love club football. Managing your country is more about managing egos` and I don't think many top managers are able to do this at Country level, because if they play up at club level you can either sell them or dump them in the reserves, Sancho & Ali come to mind. Cant see Jurgen Klopp doing the Job or Pochettino as they couldn't manage egos at their clubs last year hence one of the reason why they are no longer managers. Its lots of Would's, could's or maybe`s, but at the end of the day Southgate has done a fantastic job but had he been a little braver in selection then things might have turned out differently. Watkins, Toney, Gordon, Eze, Palmer. should have had more of a chance and had a lot to offer in my opinion.

Exactly, why we need a Manager who is brave to make those decisions. Another Manager who came to mind was Martinez(Portugal) Wouldn't drop Ronaldo !!

English FA is probably the richest at the Euros too…. They paid him accordingly to be fair. £5 million a year is probably the market rate for a high level manager in England. Prem managers are also on astronomical sums of money. He did well and maybe the perceived lack of top level experience at the very highest level was maybe the difference between him bringing home the trophies and not. It’s been a hell of an eight years though!! Thanks and well done Gareth, but we move on and look forward to a new chapter.

An honest, decent and thoughtful man who dragged the national side out of the post Euro 2016/Sam Allardyce trough.

The  job (and the weight of expectation) ate Gareth Southgate in the end. The footballing public might one day accept that England have no right to win things (very little evidence through history to support this theory), despite what all the media and vested interests believe.

They can all move onto their next sacrificial lamb now.

May not have a right to win things but at least give it a go, he may not have received so much criticism then, if he had been proactive rather than reactive. The opportunities have been there for Southgate to lead England to victory but he didn’t do it.

Controversial thought, but maybe England's players just aren't as good as the hype would have us believe?  Perhaps Southgate and his staff, after seeing them up close in training every day during get togethers, matches and tournaments, understood this. He has them occasionally (outside of tournaments anyway) and just doesn't have the time to fine tune systems and tactics that they do at club level.

In the cold light of day, and with the dust having settled and the hangovers got over, his record of 2 finals, a semi final and a 1/4 final stands up to scrutiny (in my opinion anyway). Compare that to our great rivals,, the German national side, who managed 2 group stage eliminations, last 16 and 1/4 finals over the same period.
